R S D: The sympathetic nerves control blood flow and sweating and color of the skin. When the sympathetic nerves are irritated, bouts of pain, discoloration, temperature change and sweat change can occur. This is referred to as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (rsd). It is difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat. A thorough evaluation would be appropriate. ...Read more
Collaterals: Without a procedure such as a bypass or an angioplasty there are only two things that can do this. One is dissolution of a blood clot restoring normal blood flow and the other is developing collateral circulation around the obstructed artery . I assume this is not "spasm" which should last no more than minutes ...Read more
I can feel my abdominal pulse just by laying my hand over it; when i push on it i hear a whooshing sound and i can feel the blood flow. Normal?
It could be normal : However it could also be a sign of aortic aneurysm (widening of the aorta) & renal artery stenosis (narrowing) - these conditions are uncommon among young people unless they're chronic smokers and have a strong family history of cardiovascular or renal conditions. You may need imaging studies to confirm them. See your dr for any concerns. Take care! ...Read more
Isat on my hand long story it fell asleep I cut off blood flow for 3 minutes or so will the blood come back my hand is throbbing a bit not purple tho?
I've noticed that recently blood flow is more easily restricted in my left arm when bent. E.g. resting my head on my left hand while on desk. Concern?
You are describing: symptoms of restricted blood flow, such as..? Numbness, tingling (like falling asleep) and pain can be associated with dependent position over long periods of time. It has to do with the nerve being compressed or overstimulated. If you have recurrent purple or blue hands, even without prolonged pressure on them, you need to get checked out by healthcare provider ...Read more
Was asked to take blood samples at home to send to a lab. My thumb isn't cooperating with me. Any suggestions on how to get enough blood?
Which lab?: The major national laboratories have collection stations in most cities. Contact the lab for the local draw station and get your blood collected at that facility. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. Get HPV vaccine. ...Read more
4hiv specialist. 4 HIV infection from blood receipent cut on hand should be deep or can be wirh superficial cut n large blood or 1 infected drop enoug?
Dull/ weak pain in left thumb. Radiating up arm to behind collar bone. Seems to get worse as day goes on. Took blood pressure past week. Normal.
I woke up & my thumb & pointer finger on my right hand were purple. As the day goes by they get darker. Lighter in the morning. Blood pressure up?
No: This has nothing to do with your blood pressure. If confirmed objectively, it suggests arterial for venous obstruction. Is your hand swollen? (would suggest venous disease) Does it hurt? Is it weak? (would suggest arterial disease). This should be evaluated immediately because if you have an arterial embolism, the next one could cause a stroke. Go to the ER. ...Read more
My wrist/thumb cracks, hurts, gets warm, stiff and sometimes i get tiny red dots over a vein leading to my thumb. Could this be a blood clot? Tendonitis?
I have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel. The thumb and first two fingers on my right hand are going numb during the night. When i wake up and the blood starts flowing back I have excruciating pain. Can't this cause damage to my hand?
Yes. : Yes. Carpal tunnel syndrome is structural. A normal tunnel that tendons and nerves pass through to the hand is tighter or looser in individuals based on genetics--just like loose or tight joints. Those of us with tight tunnels gradually develop carpal tunnel syndrome. The end result is permanent nerve damage (weakness, atrophy, numbness). It's nothing you are doing that is causing this. You are just starting to notice that you have the disease. It is a very slowly progressive disease and you might be able to manage the symptoms with wrist splints at night for years. When you start getting numb in spite of the splints or when the numbness lingers for more than 5-10 minutes, then it's time to have surgery. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Is it a general rule of thumb to see a pcp for everything and he will refer you to a specialist or can you check with a specialist from the start?
Preference: It depends on your insurance requirements as well as on your personal preference and medical complexity. Most generally healthy people are well served by primary care. Complex cardiac / pulmonary / endocrine (/etc.) problems may be better addressed by going to the expert. Primary are better at overall coordination of healthcare. ...Read more

Color of blood: Blood color is based on the hemoglobin in it. When hemoglobin is carrying oxygen, the molecule changes shape and this causes a change in the appearance/color. When the hemoglobin has little oxygen, the structure is different and so the color appears different. Based on the status of the hemoglobin, the lights in the room and the status of your eyes, the color looks orange. This is normal. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
