My Rdw Is High
What does it me if my Eosinophils are low, but my RDW are high? My Eosinophils are 1% and my RDW are 14.6%
Nothing definite: These results alone are not concerning. Your Eosinophils can be 1% of your total count and be fine. The RDW tells about the red cells size in comparison to each other. The closer they are to the same size, the lower the RDW number. A little variance is fine. But would need the rest of the report to be sure there are no issues of concern. ...Read more
Can my hemoglobin be low and my RDW be high because I just came off my menstrual? All other labs normal
Iron: Yes, in young woman like yourself, menstrual period- especially if you have heavy period- you can have iron deficiency anemia- that can be presented with low hemoglobin and elevated rdw. Having said that other condition beside iron deficiency can also give the same presentation. Go to see your md and get your iron checked at the very least. ...Read more
Hi, I'm a 38yr old female whom recently had a complete blood work done and all came back normal except for mchc was low- 31.5 And my rdw was high at 15.5. I'm worried and want to know what this could indicate?
You are NORMAL :): If your blood tests are all normal, specifically CBC test, except for mild abnormality in MCHC and RDW, then you have NO medical conditions and you are NORMAL. Why were MCHC and RDW slightly abnormal? Most likely reason is lab error, which is very common and cannot be avoided. I strongly suspect that if you get a repeat CBC test done, your MCHC and RDW will be normal, like the rest of your tests. ...Read more
Need the numbers:
All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to know the actual values. It is likely that you have iron deficiency anemia which is common in menstruating women. Take oral iron and multivitamins.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

Is a sed rate of 30 high? What does this mean? A cause of my chronic hives? Also my rdw was high...at a 18.8
Sed rate: A sed rate of 30 is not too high, normal is up to around 20. It is a lab doctors use to follow inflammation in the body, it may be high due to your hives, or arthritis, or infection, or another auto immune disease. You do not treat a see rate, rather you look for some cause of inflammation in the body that may be triggering it to be elevated. ...Read more

No worry: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, the slightly high RDW is no cause for concern. You may wish to take oral iron supplements as women tend to be iron deficient due to menstrual blood loss. Your test results are okay. ...Read more

Since 2007 my mch, mcv, hct, hgb, and baso tests have come back low. Now my RDW is high, potassium is low and CRP level has doubled. Why?

Often nothing: Lab reference ranges are set to that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. RDW does tend to rise as the body becomes depleted of iron, before anemia develops. If this could be you (frequent blood donor, heavy periods, vegetarian), it may be a red flag. If there's a more worrisome cause, it will be clear from the look of the peripheral smear. Best wishes. ...Read more

I was feeling ill and went to er and was told I was fine but I see my rdw and monocyte is high on my blood test. Should I worry?
If you have been checked in ER, your doctor would have told you if there was anything significantly wrong.
The kind of changes in your blood that you have noticed are not all that important in terms of causing any health probleems. As long as your Hemoglobin (Hb), white cell count (WBC) and platelet count are in the normal (reference range) you can be worry free.

Need a workup: Lab results mean nothing in isolation, and reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Your physician should know what to do. ...Read more

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Red cell size:
Variablity. Rdw is the short term for distribution of red cell width and reflects variation in red cell size. The variation may be due hemolytic anemia, microvascular disease, hemoglobin disorders, iron deficiency anemia etc. See this site for more info.

Thanks for asking!: Rdw stands for red blood cell distribution width, which is a measured parameter in a CBC test. High RDW value indicates greater variation in rbc size. This may be associated with iron deficiency anemia, folate/b12 deficiency anemia, mixed deficiency, recent hemorrhage, . ..Etc. ...Read more
My rdw-cv is 19.6% and is high. What other tests are required and what are the possible health problems.
CBC.: Rdw-cv measures the variability of red cell size. It is useful in finding the cause of anemia, or detecting early deficiencies of iron, B12 or folic acid. Rdw can be effected by alcohol, medications, chronic health conditions, so is not helpful by itself. It has to be viewed in the context of the rest of the CBC (complete blood count) and your health history. ...Read more
Blood count terms:
Rdw means red cell distribution width, which is the range of values for the width of your red blood cells. A higher number could mean that you are making lots more red cells for some reason.
Mch mean mean (or average) red cell hemoglobin, which is the amount of hemoglobin in each red blood cell. If it's low, this means that your cells aren't carrying as much hemoglobin as they should. ...Read more
Hematology: If the red cell, total white blood cell and platelet counts, as well as the MCV and MCH are all normal, the low MCHC and high RDW may not be significant or diagnostic. Low lymphocytes combined with high neutrophils can be seen in certain infections, use of corticosteroids, or in blood dyscrasias. However this question can be better answered by your MD (who knows your results) or a hematologist ...Read more
Size variation: It means nothing by itself; plus, hopefully you know that all lab reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Early iron deficiency raises RDW before anemia begins but often it's up for no apparent reason. Mine's usually high because I donate blood. Don't worry about it. ...Read more
Don't Rx a lab: Early iron deficiency often does this, but remember that lab reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end.
