My Newborn's Umbilical Cord Is Bleeding
Half my newborns umbilical cord fell off however some still remains...I notice a little bleeding but it now seems to be inside like a deep red inside ?
Umbilical cord: The umbilical cord dries up and falls off like a scab on the average by 7 to 14 days. I think the longest time that has ever been noted in the medical literature is 90 days. Think for a moment. Have you ever seen anyone at the beach with an umbilical cord? As to the slight am ought of liquid blood that you might see, the clot in there can liquefy over time. You can clean it up with hydrogen peroxi ...Read more
5day old newborn. Umbilical cord residual dropped off today but against diaper friction. Bleeding a little, opening doesn't look unscathed. Help?
Why is my two weeks old baby still bleeding from the umbilical cord after it has fallen off within the first week?
Not unusual: It is not unusual for there to be some minor spotting/oozing from the cord area even after the stump has come off. Thee were 3 huge blood vessels there and sometimes there is a bit of spotting. The second possibility is something called an umbilical granuloma, where a fragment of cord is still present and actively bleeds down within the umbilicus. Have pediatrician check this at next visit. ...Read more
Most likely okay.: A tiny bit of pink or red after the umbilical cord falls off is fine. Keep the area clean and dry. Don't bathe the baby yet (most newborns aren't rolling in the mud), and if the oozing continues more than a day or so, let your doctor know. ...Read more
My newborn's umbilical cord stump just fell off. There is what looks like pus where the cord was. How should I treat this? Can I tub bathe her?
Umbilical stump: You can wash the cord area with soap and water during a tub bath and dry it up with a q-tip. You can also just wipe the umbilical stump with alcohol. Sometimes that area may not dry up quickly so your pediatrician may cauterize it with a silver nitrate stick. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Blood cell disorders: It is the blood obtained from the cord, not the cord itself, that is being used to treat disease. Early, primitive cells, called stem cells, are used to treat many disorders of the blood, including aplastic and other anemias, leukemias, certain immunologic diseases, and even some metabolic disorders. Ongoing research includes non-blood diseases, such as stroke, diabetes, and even heart attacks. ...Read more

My newborn lost her umbilical cord this afternoon. When i noticed it had fallin off i also noticed that the cord site was green. Is this normal or no?
It'll turn black as : Shrivels up. Because of the applied silver nitrate, it can be greenish-looking.Skin touched by silver nitrate can look black. Signs of infection, called oomphalitis, are redness & swelling of the skin around the cord, or cracked, weepy areas. Just clean around the cord gently with a little alcohol on sterile gauze & fold down the diaper so it doesn't occlude or rub the area. Enjoy your baby! ...Read more
My newborn is a week and 6 days old and her umbilical cord stump fell off but at the bottom still looks open is this normal?
Call your peds: Sometimes, the umbilicus (belly button) doesn't fully heal at the base of the cord, so when the cord falls off, the baby can have something called an umbilical granuoloma - basically a non-healing wound. It's relatively common, and takes just 1 or 2 visits to the pediatrician's office to get it fixed. Make sure your infant is still eating, peeing, seeming as per her usual, 13-day self. ...Read more

Is it ok to use hydrogen peroxide to clean my newborns umbilical cord if its hanging off with a little yellow still inside? It also has a odor
Yes: Peroxide can be helpful if used correctly. Direct application followed by drying the area is a good way to kill staph germs and rinse the area.Peroxide turns to water as it bubbles off oxygen. If you leave it wet the area becomes soggy and interferes with the drying that needs to take place.Rubbing alcohol is also helpful and has a natural drying effect as it evaporates after application. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends on situation: Since the umbilical stump is composed of arteries & a vein that fed baby during pregnancy, it acquired a significant size.As the cord stump dries & separates, there is often a bit of bleeding.Usually only enough to cover a few q-tips.Local care as you would a scratch is all that is needed unless the bleeding persists.Occasionally the pediatrician needs to cauterize a stubborn bleeder in the offic. ...Read more
