They also have a cycle of breathing called periodic breathing where they breathe very fast then slow it down and can have an interval of up to 10-15 seconds of "holding their breath" then it starts over. Ask neonatologist: Deciding whether your baby needs surfactant is more than just a yes/ no answer. A 27 weeker is deficient in this, so even if breathing well now, that may not be the case in 24-48 hours. If your neonatologist is recommending it, i would definitely go with it. It can prevent days to weeks of extra need for ventilation and works much better if given early rather than waiting to see if problems occur. ...Read more
