Cause of Aphthous ulcers is unclear. Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment is symptomatic.

Lichen Planus?: This can be used for chronic rashes such as oral lichen planus for short period of time. After two weeks the area should be reevaluated for stopping cream, decreasing frequency of application or changing to other medication.

No: Cold sores are related to recurrent herpes virus outbreaks and only occur on regular skin often near the junction of the lip/regular skin. Mouth sores, apthous ulcers, etc. Can be recurrent but are not the same virus.

Ingredient: Your body chemistry will react differently than the next person's body chemistry to the ingredients in various toothpaste. Sodium laurel sulfate, a foaming agent, may be the ingredient you take issue with. Try different brands until you find one you are happy with. Just make sure toothpaste contains fluoride to help fight cavities.

Let me explain: Some diseases are marked by an increase in melanin production. Just to name a few, the rare endocrine disorder addison's disease, the hereditary intestinal disease peutz-jeghers syndrome and the bone ailment von recklinghausen's disease can all cause patches of darkening and discoloration that can affect the gums as well as other parts of the body. Minocycline, antimalarial agents also.

Bad habit: Whether it is cheek and/or lip biting (like you) or nail biting, hair twirling, or any other habit, people often do these things initially to relieve stress. After a while they can "take a life of their own" and become a habit. Bad habits are hard to break and some people find professional counseling helpful in developing strategies to break a habit.
