My dr. Lowered my dose of Prozac (fluoxetine) from 20mg to 10mg. Because of the half life does this mean I will have more in my system and if so for how long?
The answer is "maybe", if you suffer from chronic major depression and you have not responded well to any other antidepressant, psychotherapy or electroconvulsive therapy and you are significantly improved only by prozac (fluoxetine).
This is very unlikely as new treatments and medications are always being developed and depression is sometimes self-limiting. ...Read more
YES: Generally very safe; however, as you grow older, you may need doseage adjustments. ...Read more
My girlfriien said she was on Prozac (fluoxetine) temporarily. That was a year ago. Now she takes two pills every morning. Sex life is a dud. If a woman can't come?
Antidotes: There are several things out there that help as antidotes to the sexual dysfunction caused by serotonin reuptake inhibitors like prozac (fluoxetine). Suggest to your girlfriend that she ask the doctor who prescribed her the Prozac (fluoxetine) for suggestions for antidotes, and if the psychiatrist is not familiar with these, suggest she someone with psychopharmacology specialized experience. ...Read more
Started on Prozac (fluoxetine) for ocd+anxiety a couple of mos ago. Lately been feeling very happy all the time, I feel so lucky & I love my life. Is this normal?
Yes, but: It is OK to feel good, and love your life. However, if you are concerned you are having a Mania episode, triggered by the fluoxetine, you need to talk to your provider immediately. Have the provider assess you for mania or hypomania; if you do not have these, then you are doing very well! Be safe, and talk to your provider. ...Read more
Does Prozac (fluoxetine) not just cover up the reality of life? How can one have an emotional relationship on prozac (fluoxetine)? The depth is gone, she is just level, non feeli
Multifaceted issue: Interesting question, with mulitple perspectives. Prozac (fluoxetine) can help manage depressive and anxiety symptoms quite well. Maybe this seems to you, a little too well. I've seen people whose depressions were so severe they could not relate to others at all. For these, Prozac (fluoxetine) and others can open up whole worlds of possibility - allowing experiences of interpersonal connection, communication, and care. ...Read more

It can be difficult: Anxiety can be quite difficult to treat. Prozac (fluoxetine) is making me MORE depressed and causing me to lose interest in the love/dating/relationship part of my life. HELP!
An issue: Sometimes medications like Prozac (fluoxetine) (an SSRI) can blunt libido, sexual function and desire. There is a concern for some people it can create feelings of apathy. This is frequently related to dose or specific medication. Helen Fisher, PhD http://www. Helenfisher. Com/ has raised concerns that SSRIs might affect attachment and bonding, given there is overlap with brain systems for sex and love. ...Read more
Taking 10mg Prozac for PMS. No depression at all. Will this interfere with my genuine zest for life? How likely is low libido? I have good libido now :)
I was taking Prozac and wellbutrin (bupropion). Started feeling very nonchalant about life and it scared me. Stopped pro and started Zoloft. Same issue. Ideas?
What is nonchalant?: I read both of your questions and it sounds like you suffer from depression which is helped with medication, when you say nonchalant about life, do you mean less worried and uptight? If that is the case, it is a good thing. But it sounds like you it worried you. What was the scary part of that feeling! ...Read more
Bupro+sertra caused excessive daytime sleepiness, >10mon, Prozac (fluoxetine) worse, fully interacted with my life. Please guide me. Grateful.
Unusual problem: Bupropion (wellbutrin), sertraline (zoloft), and Prozac (fluoxetine) are usually activating antidepressants. Excessive daytime sleepiness is uncommon with any of them, but is more likely from the ssris (sertraline and fluoxetine). It may be that bupropion by itself would not cause this side-effect. Best to discuss this with your prescribing doctor. ...Read more

SSRI antidepresant: Its been around a while now, but pretty revolutionary when it first came out. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor most commonly used to treat depression. The ssris were a big step forward due to far less side effects than the tricyclic antidepressants that were the main treatment for depression prior to that. ...Read more

Prozac (fluoxetine): I agree with drs. Ali and satinover that Prozac (fluoxetine) can be very useful when prescribed and re-assessed carefully. However, I believe it (and other antidepressants) can be over-prescribed too. I have seen non-psychiatrists (as well as psychiatrists) jump to prescription pads when a patient weeps or tells of grief following a death. Not every tear signifies depression requiring prozac (fluoxetine). ...Read more

Won't fix depression: Antidepressants all need to be taken on a regular daily basis to work as antidepressants. The usual daily dose of Prozac (fluoxetine) is 20 mg, but some people need more. Prozac is sometimes prescribed instead for pms symptoms, in which case it need not be taken continuously. The dosing is best discussed in person with the prescribing doctor. ...Read more
Depends on you: The timing doesn't change the effect of Prozac (fluoxetine) on depression, anxiety, or panic attacks. But Prozac tends to be "activating" and might disturb sleep if taken at bedtime. Most patients take it after their first food of the day, e.g., after breakfast. Rarely, patients find it sedating instead of activating, and then it's best to take it at bedtime. ...Read more
