Calf swelling--do I apply ice or heat?

Calf swelling--do I apply ice or heat?

Depends: Ice is good on acute injuries to decrease the inflammation, like when an athlete sprains an ankle. Heat promotes blood flow to the area in order to help healing. Depending on the cause of your calf swelling will dictate which would be more helpful. Many times if both calfs are swelling it can be from decreased venous return and therefore leg elevation, and compressive stockings can help. ...Read more

Why did I get thigh/calf swelling out of nowhere?

See your doctor soon: One of the worst things we worry about with one-sided calf or leg swelling out of the blue is a blood clot. If you haven't had any trauma recently or think you've pulled a muscle, you should see your doctor. Other things include a ruptured baker's cyst (a fluid filled sac behind the knee), or a ruptured head of one of the calf muscles. Best of luck and take care. ...Read more

Does a hyperextended knee also lead to calf swelling?

Yes, calf X's knee: The calf muscles cross the back of the knee as they originate from the back of the thigh bone next to the knee capsule. When the knee hyperextends, the back of the knee often over stretches. This can cause injury to your knee that includes the posterior capsule and juxtaposed calf muscles. The calf muscles can become strained or torn causing pain and swelling in the injured calf muscle. ...Read more

I am experiencing leg pain, leg swelling and calf swelling my leg is red hot to touch my gp is not open don't know what to do?

I am experiencing leg pain, leg swelling and calf swelling my leg is red hot to touch my gp is not open don't know what to do?

Usually an emergency: Calf-swelling with pain is usually an emergency because doctors want to evaluate the patient to see if there is a blood clot in the leg. Such a clot can break off a chunk, flow to the lungs, and be fatal. There are other causes of leg pain and swelling, but always rule out the potentially lethal ones first. One should tell doctors about any surgeries, injuries, medications, prolonged sitting, etc. ...Read more

I have a intra muscular calf contusion from impact to the calf. Swelling pain limping no bruising. Can walking on it do more damage. I have noinsurane?

No health insurance: Just because you don't have insurance doesn't mean you can't get healthcare. On my website (sorry, no way around that), I've listed a number of options for free (or at least low cost) health care, drugs ; tests. Or skip my site ; just search online for free healthcare. Lots of options are available to you. Walking won't make bruise worse. But do go see a doc if pain gets worse rather than better. ...Read more

I am experiencing calf pain and calf swelling. The following also describe me: Lower leg pain and Leg tenderness. What should I do?

Why RU waiting?: Calf pain and swelling are at least two of the ingredients describing the possibility of a blood clot or blood vessel inflammation in the leg. I would not wait for the third. Failure to not treat a clot could be catastrophic. To remove all doubt, get ton urgent care ASAP. ...Read more

Can a plantars wart (on the bottom, outside part of the foot) cause foot, ankle and calf swelling and pain? Or is it likely 2 separate issues?

Can a plantars wart (on the bottom, outside part of the foot) cause foot, ankle and calf swelling and pain? Or is it likely 2 separate issues?

Not directly related: These are likely separate issues. A plantar wart can create pain, resulting in a change in your gait (how you walk) and thus put more pressure on other areas of your leg. Thus, it's theoretically possible these two issues are INDIRECTLY related. However, foot/ankle/calf swelling and pain without an injury make me think about a potential blood clot. Please seek help from a physician if persistent. ...Read more

Polycythemia vera verified by second opinion. + Crohn’s. Unilateral calf swelling. Unilateral superficial vein. D-dimer + US normal. Get venogram?

Difficult to know: Polycythemia vera and Chrons are both risk factors for DVT. Also your sign and symptoms are suspicious for DVT. Venous Doppler US for a single exam may miss small DVT especially in the calf. D dimer if normal pretty sensitive. Many options repeat: Ultrasound and possibly d dimer, venogram [but these are not done much now], follow closely. Recommend close follow up with your doctor/ vein expert. ...Read more
