My LDL is 140. Should I drink atorvastatin 10mg every day ?

My LDL is 140. Should I drink atorvastatin 10mg every day ?

In some, yes: Definitely if you have had diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke or peripheral vascular disease a statin such as Atorvastatin is needed. If you have none of these then a healthy diet, regular exercise and stopping smoking is what i would recommend. One may suggest statin however if your HDL is very low and you have other risk factors such as hypertension and a strong family history. ...Read more

High cholesterol: My go to drug for high cholesterol (c) reduction is Crestor (rosuvastatin) and it needs to be given in reduced dosage in patients with chronic kidney disease. I would start you on a dose of 5 mg/day. That will likely not be enough to lower your levels significantly. You need to go to an endcrinologist (e) to see if the e can add other drugs you can take to lower your dangerously high c. Good luck. ...Read more

Hi recent diagnosis sle and aerd. Chol 418, LDL 319. Hbp, CKD 3. On Lipitor (atorvastatin) 20mg day. Is this the best med for my cond? What would work better? Concerned.

High Cholesterol: Your cholesterol (c) is extremely high along with your LDL c. You need to speak to an endocrinologist (e) to see what medicine the e would put you on. At the very minimum, the maximum dose of Lipitor (atorvastatin) is 80 mg and you are on only 20. Ask your doctor to see if that dose could be increased. You may also need to lose weight and modify your diet. See an e and get some input from her about your lipids. ...Read more

Im a 38 yr old male. Fasting LDL is 165, HDL 45 and trigs 131. My family history is pretty clean. Should I start 10mg lipitor (atorvastatin)? My dr thinks I should.

I would: I would, but, ultimately, it's up to you. (in point of fact, i do). There's no point in taking a statin for a brief period. It's effective over the long term. A concentration camp type diet would lower your cholesterol just as effectively. Which course do you see as preferable? A prudent diet with Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a powerful combination. Do you believe in treating advanced disease or preventing it? ...Read more

Women 53 years old. Cholesterol 197, LDL 157. Should I have to take atorvastatin?

Depends on history: For the general population, treatment of LDL doesn't begin until over 160 (or 190) mg/dl and goal is to lower to under 130. For those at high risk of coronary disease, goal is 100, and those who have proven cad, goal is further reduced to 70 mg/dl. If you have other risk factors, it may be appropriate. Either way, diet, exercise, and weight loss are appropriate. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more

I have been on Lipitor (atorvastatin) for quite some time now always had very good readings however recent readings are very low my ldl-0.59, HDL 81 weird?

No weird : Your high HDL is excellent, and likely protective. Your LDL is lower than recommended by even the strictest guidelines. There are cases however, where we intentionally push the LDL to low levels like yours, in patients that are at high risk. Discuss your personal situation with your doctor. ...Read more
