My Knee Is Unstable
Sometimes my knee feels unstable and weak. When I sit down, I can feel it beating and sometimes it feels like it is twitching. What is happening?
I had an ACL reconstruction 6 months ago. After finishing PT my Dr said the graft is too long and my knee is unstable. Should I do another surgery?
If it is 2 long-: -it's probably non functioning. Only way to get stability is to have it redone. Whether you should have a re do, it's up 2 you. If you can get by with a brace fine, but @ your age having it redone can save your knee from further damage from the instability. If it were me I would go for it. ...Read more

I tore my mpfl so my knee is very unstable but is there another way to stabalize my knee without surgery?
I ran down a hill at full speed and days later my knees are feeling unstable and are experiencing aches and pains. Is it a bad idea to run a marathon?
Prob not: Hard to say w/ limited information and no physical exam... But if you have pain in your knees coming down hills that sounds like' kneecap' pain. See an ors (orthopedist) before you embark on marathon training. Some people who are ' malaligned' @ the knee will not be able to tolerate the training involved to run a marathon... If u are set on running find a 'flat' course and train accordingly ...Read more

Hello, about year ago, I was running on a threadmill and somehow my knee twisted itself, and til then, the knee is unstable. How should treat the injury?
If it is truly unstable, possibly there's a torn ligament that needs to be repaired. You need to be seen by an orthopedic surgeon for a physical exam and who may likely order imaging like an MRI. If you're not looking to do any surgery. Wearing a knee brace and physical therapy is probably the best you could do. Hope this helps ...Read more
Relaxin: Relaxin is a hormone that is released in pregnancy. It relaxes the connective tissue in your joints. This makes them looser and makes you more unstable when you walk or exercise. Relaxin is the reason pregnant women waddle. It is also the reason pregnant women are more likely to dislocate their joints. Take things slowly and use extra support when pregnant. ...Read more

Had lateral release 2 weeks ago, knee still swollen painful & feels weak & unstable will this improve what if it stays unstable what will they do?
Ask your surgeon: Best one to really answer the questions is the one who fixed the knee. You could have an infection, or be bearing too much weight on it or be too active too soon which could explain the problems. This does need evaluating. If the knee is truly not stable, further repair will be needed to correct this problem ...Read more
Knee unstable for 3months. Have pain front and back of knee and radiates down shin. Hurts to bend. Pain keeps me up at night. Trying ice and heat.?
Be seen: I would be seen. An exam and appropriate studies will usually determine the cause. Ligamentous injuries, such as an injury to the ACL can cause an unstable knee. If you are having a lot of trouble with pain running down your leg, it could also be coming from your back. In severe cases pinched nerves in the back can cause weakness in the muscles around the knee making it less stable. ...Read more
Hard to say: It is good to know your MRI looks fine as that would show the major ligaments in the knee and whether or not there is a problem there. Vascular or neurological causes are possible although fairly rare; it is also possible the MRI was miss read or missed something. Don't hesitate to get a second opinion. ...Read more

Can a dislocation tear your ligaments in the knee? If so, which ones? And can this lead to an unstable knee?
Yes: A knee dislocation usually takes out 3 ligaments, acl, pcl, and or mcl &lcl. The first thing 2 investigate is the conition of the vascular status of the popliteal area. If I know it was a true dislocation or I reduced it my first study is an arteriogram 2 eval vasc status, ligament tears r not limb threatening & repair in my hands best done when knee quiets down. Will knee stability improve after a severe knee sprain? My knee buckles inwards and is still unstable after 4 days, even though pain is almost gone.
Time Heals: Ligament and tendon sprain (as in the knee) can take months to heal. After ensuring that you have no major tears of meniscus or ligaments, you will benefit from using a brace (the otc elastic kind may be sufficient) - this will help stabilize the joint allowing better healing. Range of motion exercise, but but heavy exercise will benefit. Easy does it! ...Read more

I slightly twisted my knee and heard a pop. There was no pain, no swelling. I could walk, put weight, although felt weak/unstable?
May need to see MD: Usually pops have to do with abnormal movement or tears of cartilage. In the knee this could involve ligaments, tendons or the meniscus. It is good that there is no pain or swelling but if your knee feels unstable then use an elastic bandage like a Ace wrap to improve stability and see your doctor if this does not improve in a few days. ...Read more
