Inflammation: Knee pain is most commonly caused by inflammation from bursitis, tendonitis, or cartilage degeneration. A good physical exam and possible imaging could be used to confirm the diagnosis. Less common causes of knee pain are irritated nerve roots from the lumbar spine, infection, or tumors. ...Read more

The bottom part of my knee hurts after basketball and I can't put weight on my knee, bend it, or straighten it out all the way. It is swollen

Need to be examined: When you have swelling and trouble bending it, you may have injured an internal structure in the knee. The inability to straighten it could be damage to your knee cartilage (meniscus) as well as your inability to put weight on it. You will need an exam to evaluate your ligaments (ACL, MCL, LCL) and to see if the swelling is from the joint. ...Read more

Varies: I am sorry you are not doing better, hopefully will resolve over time; I would certainly let your surgeon know. Most common causes of posterior knee pain after a partial menisectomy would include : persistent effusion/bakers cyst, recurrent tear, or underlying chondromalacia that was not addressed in surgery. Again, I would let your surgeon know you are having problems. ...Read more

My knee hurts when I put pressure on it. Not when I run or bend it or anything else. Just with pressure. What could be wrong with it?

INFLAMMATION: This sounds like mild inflammation of the supporting muscles and tendons of the patella (kneecap). Many causes are possible:if you are exercising- remember to warm up and cool down. Certainly simple passive flexion and extension of the knee will strengthen the quadriceps and supporting ligaments. I suggest massage with biofreeze. If not improving-orthopedics. ...Read more

Back of knee pain. When I put pressure on it there is a sharp pain in the back/middle of my knee. It also hurts to bend it. Is it just a sprain?

Maybe: It could be a strain, but could also be an injury to the articular cartilage (lining of the ends of the bone), meniscus (cartilage pad), or even a fracture. If your symptoms do not respond to rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory meds or is causing you severe limitations, see an orthopedic doctor for an evaluation. If he/she feels further testing is needed, an xray or MRI will be ordered. Good luck! ...Read more

Hi. I have knee pain after I bend my knee and then extend it, and it also hurts whenever I play sports. Or put to much pressure on it? What do I have?

Hard to say: There are many moving parts in the knee. If you have a lot of swelling, it may mean you tore the meniscus, the padding between the tibia and femur, or you might have torn a ligament. But it could also be a minor contusion (bruising). You will not know unless you see an orthopedic doctor who will do an exam and may or may not order an MRI which is the best way of seeing looking inside the knee. ...Read more

Back of my knee hurts everytime I travel long hours sitting in a bus, can you tell me what can be the. Reason and remedy?

Not sure but..: One possible explanation is blood clots. These can form in the legs if people are traveling by bus or plane and sitting without moving for extended periods of time. Of course, it could also be muscle/skeletal discomfort due to position. Blood clots are more common in one leg and can also have leg swelling, redness, a 'cord' that can be felt behind the knee. ...Read more

Knee pain in petella tendon area. Hurts when sitting down too long or standing up.?

Torn miniscus, bursa: The more common causes of your symptoms are petallar bursitis (the patellar bursa becomes swollen, irritated and painful), and a meniscal tear (tearing of the cartilage disc between the femur and the tib/fib complex. If it persists for more than a few days, you need to see an orthopedist for an eval and knee MRI. In the meantime, an adjustable brace would not hurt, and would give support. ...Read more

Fractured head of fibula 3mons. Ago in a fall, still having pain in knee and lower leg. Swelling behind knee. Hurts all the time more when I stand long?

Possible meniscus: The fibula head fracture should be healed and not causing much discomfort. It is also not in the main part of the knee joint and therefore arthritis in the knee is not from your fracture. However these injuries can be associated with ligament tears and meniscus tears.
