My husband has been overworked and not sleeping enough for many years. Last night he got very cold suddenly. What caused this?

Many causes: Temperature-related symptoms such as coldness are secondary to changes affecting the sympathetic-parasympathetic reflex mechanism. Information you gave of overworked and not sleeping suggest an overstressed condition which generally result in tachycardia and sweating from sympathetic responses. Being cold can be from bradycardia and constriction of integumental arteries to divert blood to viscera. ...Read more

Why does my husband sweat at night while sleeping?

Why does my husband sweat at night while sleeping?

Sweaty sleeper: Is he otherwise a good sleeper? Does he snore, gasp or move around during sleep? If yes, sweating may reflect a sleep disorder. Otherwise, the normal fall in body temperature during sleep may be impeded by over-insulation with too many blankets, comforters, or a sleeping room temperature that’s too high. These processes differ between men and women. Try letting him set the thermostat ;-) ...Read more

Excessive: Excessive sweating and/or increased temperature at night can be caused by many things. Your husband could be suffering from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating, no known cause) an infectious process may be going on (lung, autoimmune etc.), some types of cancer can result in this (i.e. Lyphoma), certain medications (some antidepressants, steroids etc.) hormone disorders (thyroid disease etc.), low blood sugar, the list can go on, but I will stop here and encourage your husband to go to his primary care provider and have a detailed history and physical. If there are any underlying issues, hopefully they will be found and treated.
Good luck. ...Read more

My arm fell asleep while my husband drove us home last night. Its been 12 hours and its still asleep. I didn't sleep on it weird. Is it normal?

Arm falling asleep: 12 hours is definitely a long time to regain normal feeling to the arm. What do you mean exactly by "falling asleep." Does your arm feel numb? Pins/needles? Weakness?, does the arm feel colder? Any swelling when compared to the other arm? If that is the case you should go see a doctor. He/she should check your pulses and possibly do an ultrasound to evaluate for a venous clot (DVT). ...Read more

I startle and jerk all through the night in my sleep. It wakes me sometimes and disturbs my husband. Could it be a side effect of effexor (venlafaxine)?

NIghttime jerking: In the clinical trials with effexor, (venlafaxine) a small group (1%-3%) of patients had twitching muscles. Some (5%) had tremor. Some also had hyper-reflexia and CNS stimulation -- which could possibly contribute to what you're experiencing. Did you have a strong startle reflex before starting the medicine? If you're dreaming intensely, this could be affecting things also. Talk with your doctor about this. ...Read more
