My 6 week old has an umbilical hernia that gets bigger than his fist when he cries & strains. His Dr says its ok. How do I know if surgery is needed?

Usually not needed: Umbilical hernias usually do not require surgery - is correct. We usually wait till about 2 years of age & if not going away by then we do consider it mainly for cosmetic reasons and esp if large. If the hernia cannot be put back in (reduced) or if baby cries incessantly and cries more if hernia is touched, or the skin over it becomes read and swollen - even turns colors, visit ER. ...Read more

If left, right testes are not equal in size and hanging. (left being big). Some says normal. Other says hernia or varicocele. How it related to lump&pain.

Depends: Some variation in size is common as is the fact that one side may hang lower than the other (usually the left is lower). Varicocele and hydrocele may make one testis appear larger than the other and you may feel a lump above the testis. Only large hernias descend into the testis. Hernia and varicocele may result in a "dragging" type of pain but hydrocele is usually painless. Hope this helps. ...Read more

I have a large bump or mass just above my right thigh on the waist line. Almost the size of my fist. No pain, only sore if I poke at it a lot?

If a lipoma, it doesn't need to be removed unless it grows or becomes painful. For cosmetic purposes it can be removed at any time. Try to leave it alone and not to poke at it because they can become inflamed and tender. Good luck. ...Read more
