Several: There are several possibilities. If you're a seasoned athlete, it's due to improved stroke volume (blood ejected with each contraction) requiring a reduced heart rate to achieve a given cardiac output (the product of sv and hr). Other possibilities are: medications, vagal reactions, chronotropic incompetence, av nodal block, or sick sinus syndrome. Incidentally, typhoid fever can cause it too.

Interesting question: In theory 220- age is maximum heart rate, but I have seen some people exceed this formula, the real question is target heart rate- probably 60-70% of this according to exercise physiology - about 112 for you. If you run a bit higher comfortably, don't worry. As you excercise more your heart rate may drop as you get more fit. Still, you don't have to go that hard to get benefits. Be well!

Be seen: You should be seen just to rule out any underlying congenital cardiac abnormality; which can affect even young apparently healthy athletes.

Slowly increase...: Lack of conditioning can lead to a HR that increases rather quickly with exercise. Slowly increasing the duration & exertion with exercise - and being consistent with exercise will help lead to a lower resting HR and a slower increase. The max HR recommendations are safe; however, it isn't easy to maintain them for a length of time that would be beneficial. Build up your tolerance.

Out of shape?: Probably because you're out of shape. Talk to your doctor about a safe exercise regimen. It usually starts with regular fast walking.

See a doctor: I am a pediatric cardiologist. The other responses here are all helpful. How do you know the HR increase during exercise is dangerous. And I am assuming the hole closed on its own, but want to confirm. If you've had heart surgery or a catheterization, you may be at an increased risk of developing a heart rhythm problem. In any case, I strongly suggest you see a cardiologist.

Rapid heart rate: Increase in your heart rate is normal during and for sometime after exercising. Feeling light headed is not normal. Stop and take rest when you feel light headed. Also blurry vision is one of the signs when you should stop exercising.
