Stop: The short answer is to stop cleaning your ears, especially if you are referring to using cotton swabs in the canals. The swabs themselves can cause irritation and trauma and may cause pain as the canal and especially the ear drum are quite pain sensitive. Blocked ear: A common cause could be wax buildup. Getting water in the ear or a Qtip abrasion can cause an outer ear infection, so called swimmer's ear. This is very painful. If you have allergies, this can cause swelling of the eustachian tube and a blocked feeling. Additionally, fluid can build up in the middle ear. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are adequate OTCs for pain control. If not feeling better, see doc to get stronger pain controlling medications and further treatment. Use OTC ear wax drop: As long as you have no history of eardrum perforation, and no symptoms of current ear infection (ear pain, drainage), you can use OTC ear wax softening drops from your pharmacy. Follow package instructions. Drops will soften the wax. You still may need to flush ear canal with body temperature water. Avoid Q-tips.
