Never use Q-tips: As you probably know, Q-tips are not supposed to be used in the ear canal for the very reason you noted. You can accidentally cause a canal abrasion which bleeds. Now, you should go to an otolaryngologist to carefully examine and clean the ear. There are many OTC remedies to dissolve ear wax safely rather than using Q-tips. Eustachian tube: Hello, your ear symptoms are due to a eustachian tube dysfunction. The lining in your nose continues into the eustachian tube. Any condition affecting your nose will in turn cause ear symptoms. I would recommend afrin nasal spray as directed for 5 days. An otc decongestant can be used as directed thereafter for 7-10 days. Afrin (oxymetazoline) Might Help: If it is due to wax, there are some over the counter ear wash kits that may be helpful. If the ear pressure is due to allergies or a cold, afrin (oxymetazoline) nose spray (over the counter) will help quickly (although you can't use afrin (oxymetazoline) for more than 3 days in a row). Ear clogged: If it is from eustachian tube dysfunction, just having him perform a valsalva maneuver could do the trick. This is to pinch the nose and blow such that the ear pops. If there is fluid in the middle ear, this works pretty well, too, unless the fluid is really thick. If thick fluid or infection, may need antibiotics. Hello.: Hello. I can't diagnose your symptoms. However, your eustacian tube (tube that goes from the inside of the ear and empties into the throat) may be closed off. That can create the sense of pressure and may be causing the ringing (tinnitus). Hydrate well. Consider use of an oral decongestant. You might also consider using a product like afrin (oxymetazoline) which is sprayed in the nose. Make sure that you don't use it more often that twice a day for a max of 3 to 5 days. Depends: If you have nasal allergy, the ears may get clogged up as well. Relieving the nasal congestion with a steroid nasal spray often helps. However if the clogging is from water getting into the ear, a drop of rubbing alcohol will do wonders. Earwax should be removed. Sounds like you have wax build up with some part that's loose.
See your pcp and have them examine and clean out your ear as needed. Don't try to do it yourself because you don't want to damage your ear drum especially if you have a large amount of wax buildup. ...Read more
