My doctor told me I had a bulging disc in my back. Will I need surgery?

My doctor told me I had a bulging disc in my back. Will I need surgery?

Not for a disc : Bulge as theses are fairly normal findings on an imaging study and are not sources of the pain. So there is no indication to operate on a disc that is only bulging as its only finding or presentation. ...Read more

Hello, : Hello, i can not tell you the cause of your pain. However, when working around the spine, it is often necessary to work around, or handle nerve roots which can subsequently become inflammed and painful. The opening where the nerve exits is sometimes drilled wider so that it will not impinge on the nerve root. However, especially if the space was tight, it would be difficult not to cause some inflammation of the nerve root. Pain radiating down the leg can sometimes be caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Don't know when your surgery was done. If it is recent, it may take a while for the inflammation to resolve. You might ask your doctor to prescribe medication in the meantime. Take care. ...Read more

My doctors thinks I may herniated a disc in my back b/se of my 2 month leg pain. Any hope I can cure this soon? Can I continue my jym workouts?

Need a break: I think you need to do whatever is necessary to calm down your back pain and radicular symptoms but you may need an MRI to see if you actually have a herniated disc then, you will need to do either nsaids, therapy, or epidural shots to alleviate your pain only then can you gradually return to your workouts. ...Read more

I went to the chiropractor cause my back was hurting. He said my hip is displaced. What should I do what specialist should I see?

Orthopedist: If you you truly had a displaced hip, mostly likely you would be in agonizing pain and could not walk at all. Probably a "hokey" diagnosis. See an orthopedist, a true specialist. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with herniated disc in my lower and my doctor says i need surgery so how long is recovery?

I was diagnosed with herniated disc in my lower and my doctor says i need surgery so how long is recovery?

Varies: Open discectomy a bit longer. In my practice i perform minimally invasive surgery whereby I use a 1.5-2 cm incision and dialate the muscles and use a tubular retractor (metrx). Back to work in 3-7 days, walking hours after surgery, no lifting greater than 25 lbs or axial loading maneuvers - jogging, squats, military press x 6 weeks. Folks with jobs that require significant manual labor- off 6 w. ...Read more

Hello sir i was feeling pain on my neck from 6 month my dr. that i have AAD(Atlanto axial dislocation), and need operated.. please help me.

I have pinching in my back for three weeks. My coach thinks it's a slipped disk. I've had to sit out my sports practices. What should I do?

I have pinching in my back for three weeks. My coach thinks it's a slipped disk. I've had to sit out my sports practices. What should I do?

See a doctor: As much as I believe your coach is a great guy, he (or she) is not a doctor. I would rather you had a doctor diagnose a slipped disc than your coach. There are many causes to back pain. Slipped disc is just one. The doctor will consider your symptoms and do an exam to come up with the most likely cause. If the doctor is uncertain, he (or she) will order specific tests for the diagnosis. ...Read more

I ruptured my mpfl but my dr says i don't need surgery as I have never dislocated my knee. What else besides pt can I do to get back to 100%?

I ruptured my mpfl but my dr says i don't need surgery as I have never dislocated my knee. What else besides pt can I do to get back to 100%?

2nd opinion: Difficult to rupture your mpfl without dislocating your patella but i guess anything is possible. If patella alignment appears normal then perhaps the position and length of your injured mpfl is anatomic. Treatment in that circumstance: brace in extension for 2-3 weeks followed by gradual mobilization followed by gradual muscle rehabilitation. Timely exercise rather than specific pt modalities. ...Read more

Discs & Spinal Cord: Hello. You're young to be having bulging discs & especially spinal stenosis. Any trauma or family history of these? Were you treated in '13? What about currently? Get yourself evaluated to determine if repeat imaging studies are needed or if you can proceed directly with aggressive treatment of your constant back +/- leg pain. You can still have a high quality of life with these diagnoses. ...Read more

I had a left inguinal hernia surgery in 2010. I feel pain whenever i ejaculate, my surgeon told me to get an MRI scan done. Will this be useful?

I had a left inguinal hernia surgery in 2010. I feel pain whenever i ejaculate, my surgeon told me to get an MRI scan done. Will this be useful?

Neuropathy: Unfortunately pain years after a hernia repair in the groin does occur. First a recurrence of hernia should be ruled out. If physical exam is negative for hernia, then a dynamic us of the abdominal wall is useful, low risk, low cost imaging. If us is negative, then injections with a pain specialist can both help and provide diagnostic information. Mri is not incorrect, but also not likely to help. ...Read more
