My doctor says he needs to do a biopsy due to abnormal pap smear. Will it hurt?

My doctor says he needs to do a biopsy due to abnormal pap smear. Will it hurt?

Briefly.: A pap smear only shows individual cervical cells. In order to know if someone has mild, mod, or severe dysplasia, a biopsy needs to be done to see how far the abnormal cells go below the surface. Cervical biopsies are usually tiny samples (3mm) that are quickly taken from the cervix with a special instrument. Most women state that they feel a "pinch" but the pain lasts for only a few seconds. ...Read more

Don't know: I don't know since the biopsy results are not in yet. White spots on the cervix at colposcopy can also be due to non "cancerous CIN( Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia/Dysplasia). Await the results and talk to your MD about them. ...Read more

Abnormal pap smear 2 yrs ago and since then I haven't seen a doc, I lost my medicare and haven't seen a doctor since could this be terminal unattended?

Not usually: Abnormal pap smears are common, but does not mean they should not be repeated. Even with no insurance look for charity systems in your state and get one yearly. The grade of dysplasia and how abnormal makes a difference and doctor will treat the cervix to get rid of the high grade dysplasia as these can be a risk for turning into cervical cancer. So you can't just forget about it. ...Read more

I had an abnormal pap smear and i don't have HPV so should I be concerned? I'm only 22 and the doctor said i'll need another one in 6 months.

Yes: You should be concerned enough to follow through with the recommended recheck. You should not be worried, because even if something develops that needs to be treated, it will be found and treated long before it can become a major problem. A little inconvenience now will preclude a big problem later. The women who do have the big issues (cervical cancer) are those who do not follow up as needed. ...Read more
