My doctor says he needs to do a biopsy due to abnormal pap smear. Will it hurt?

My doctor says he needs to do a biopsy due to abnormal pap smear. Will it hurt?

Briefly.: A pap smear only shows individual cervical cells. In order to know if someone has mild, mod, or severe dysplasia, a biopsy needs to be done to see how far the abnormal cells go below the surface. Cervical biopsies are usually tiny samples (3mm) that are quickly taken from the cervix with a special instrument. Most women state that they feel a "pinch" but the pain lasts for only a few seconds. ...Read more

Biopsy (Definition)

Biopsy is tissue removed by needle or cutting to remove part of a body part. It is usually a small amount of material that is processed by a pathologist. Most of the time it is stained and looked at through a microscope to arrive at a diagnosis. Special processes are done for some tissues or problems. My annual pap smear came back with abnormal cells. My doctor wants to do a cervicle biopsy but she hasnt even tested for hpv.Is this unnecessary testin?

You should get a bx: If your pap smear showed low or high-grade squamous lesions this by definition means you have hpv. If you have a high grade lesion you need colposcopy and a biopsy. In the past hpv testing was done mainly on pap smears that showed atypical squamous cells (which may or may not be due to hpv). Today many labs test hpv on all cervical paps regardless of the result. ...Read more

Had pap smear. Doc called and said she needs to redo it cuz the lab says not enough cells collected? What does that mean and is it worrisome?

Nothing to worry : Sometimes mucus, blood, debris of cells in collected specimen overpowers cells that need to be tested for cervical cancer. It is known situation and it means that unfortunately you need to go through another exam for those cells to be collected again. At your age your doctor can collect enough cells for an additional test for HR HPV and if both tests are normal you don't need PAP for 5 years unles ...Read more

I have a mild abnormal pap smear, dr. did not give me detail he just said come back for a colposcopy. What does it mean to have a mild abnormal pap?

Need for examination: Colposcopy will allow the doctor to examine the cervix in more detail and s/he may take a biopsy to resolve the abnormality in the PAP test. It does not mean you have cancer, just that abnormality needs to be investigated. You are young enough that you should take HPV vaccine. ...Read more

Unclear: Talk with your doctor. Parathyroid disease is not contagious, and if your doctor thought you both should get further testing, there is likely part of the story missing. So, just ask. ...Read more

Papsmear came back slightly abnormal with AGUS. Doctor doesn't believe it's cancer, and he is going to perform a coloscopy. This is my first abnormal papsmear and I've been getting them every year. What else could cause AGUS?

Not to worry: ASCUS is a non-specific finding and may disappear. Do follow your doctor's advise for repeat tests. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. Get HPV vaccine ...Read more

If your doc told you they didn't want to do a pap smear because they did not want to hurt you bc the vaginna was the size of a babys why a pelvic exam?

Fear of Pelvic Exams: Perhaps this doctor does not have the experience at this time to do the pelvic exam. But a pelvic exam is needed to check for disease such as cervical disease and ovarian disease and especially if she is sexually active or has had children. Usually women over a certain age do not get them especially after 75 and not sexually active. ...Read more

Would your gyno be able to tell your pregnant when she does a pap smear?

After an endoscopic exam to the stomach doctor send to biopsy some dark tissue. He said it s maybe cause smoking!should I be worried?

Smoking and cancers: Unfortunately, even with the best equipment, there is often uncertainty about what is being seen through an endoscope. As smoking can cause cancers in the esophagus and the stomach, anything other than normal will raise concerns and possibly lead to a possible biopsy. Yes, there is a cause for concern, but fortunately more biospies are negative than positive. ...Read more

We spoke to neurologist secretary and she said it's a notochord BNCT. I will need follow up MRI's as Chordoma could develop. Do you think biopsy is required? Thank for your help.

Complex question: This condition is complex, so I hope the advice is coming from a neurologist, not his/her secretary. Benign Notochord Cell Tumor (BNCT) & chordoma are very similar in origin. The main difference in them is how much contrast is taken up during an MRI. More contrast uptake suggests chondroma, a condition requiring biopsy & surgery. BNCT may progress to chordoma. Should i be worried that I have an abnormal pap smear ? And have to go to a colposcopy clinic

Try not to: The colposcopy will really tell you if there is anything significant to worry about. Many cervix changes will get better over time as well, but the colposcopy is needed to find out what is really happening. Good luck. ...Read more

Gyno unexpectedly biopsy's cervix for thickend uterine lining says this will come back inconclusive. I will need to put you to sleep and do dnc?

I think u mean: Gyn biopsied the endometrium, not the cervix, if your gyn does not have the set-up to do this in office, like i do, which is called a hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy or D&C means it will have to be done in the hospital or maybe u can be referred to someone who can do it in office , I am able to do 99% of those in office with my pts awake, very uncommon today to have to do that in hospital. ...Read more

I had my regular pap and it came back abnormal, then they did a colposcopy and biopsy, told me they did not see anything during the colposcopy, the b?

Possible: There is a wide spectrum of what is abnormal on a pap smear. Sometimes the abnormality is such that you see it at colposcopy, many times the colposcopy is negative. It is best to have the health care provider explain to you the specific nature of your abnormal pap smear. ...Read more
