My doctor explained that I have an umbilical hernia. What does this mean?

Abd Wall Weak Point: An umbilical hernia is an opening in the abdominal wall where the belly button is located. It is possible for contents inside the abominal cavity (such as intestines) to protrude through that opening. These hernias usually require surgical repair to prevent incarceration or strangulation, where the intestines protrude and get stuck.

Umbilical Hernia (Definition)

This is a hole in the abdominal wall at the belly button, the location of the umbilical cord during fetal development. It usually closes by itself as it fills with scar tissue. Infants with a hernia here usually resolve by age 4-5. Adults may develop a hole here for unknown reasons, and will see a lump under the skin ("outie") where intra-abdominal contents have ...Read more

Heavy weights: Hernias can get bigger if there is increased pressure in the belly. If you have a bad cough, do a lot of heavy lifting or are very overweight - those are things that can be changed to reduce pressure on the hernia. It probably should be repaired and you have time as long as you are not having pain or lots of nausea. Pain, nausea, vomiting all are signs of an emergency and should take you to The ER

How do I know what it is it look like an umbilical hernia but it hurts and do I need to see a doctor?

How do I know what it is it look like an umbilical hernia but it hurts and do I need to see a doctor?

Yes, see a doc: An umbilical hernia can be an obvious large bulge at the belly button but can be a small, barely palpable defect. The small defects can be painful if a portion of the omentum gets stuck and gets inflammed. A loop of intestine can get stuck in a medium-sized hernia and become blocked or dead and create a surgical emergency. If you think that an umbilical hernia is possible, please see a doctor!

What to do if i don't know what it is it look like an umbilical hernia but it hurts and do I need to see a doctor?

What to do if i don't know what it is it look like an umbilical hernia but it hurts and do I need to see a doctor?

Depends: Depends on how bad the symptoms are. The more severe, the more likely you should see you primary care provider (pcp). Umbilical hernias are usually associated with a lump under the skin that can be pushed in to the abdominal cavity with manual pressure. Your pcp should be able to tell if its dangerous with an exam.

My baby is 3 months old and doctor tell that he has umbilical hernia. So I want to ask that, can this heal itself?

Kids seldom need rpr: Loose belly muscles help a developing fetus by allowing easy blood flow thru the umbilical cord & into babies body. After birth, that loosness may allow a transient umbilical hernia that will usually disappear when the belly muscles tighten, starting after baby learns to sit.By 2yo most uh have receded. I find girls more likely to need repair than boys ? I rarely refer for repair <2y.

Probably: Some pain with a hernia is normal. If you are having fevers, nausea/vomiting, or the skin over the hernia is red/purple and you are having a LOT of abdominal pain then you need to go the ER. Otherwise it's okay to wait. Keep an eye on it, and try to push it back in if it pops out. Wearing a back brace that gives abdominal support might help as well. Good luck!

How do you treat or reverse a small umbilical hernia where no protrusion has occurred? A doctor i went to said no surgeon would work on it yet.

Depends: This depends on whether or not you need or want to have it fixed. Keep in mind, the type of hernia you have described is very low risk to observe, especially if it is not causing symptoms. If it is causing symptoms, it may be better to fix it. See a general surgeon for a consultation to find out more, but make sure you identify your goals of treatment such as prevention or symptom relief.

I went to ER for my umbilical hernia today. The doctor pushed it back into place and gave me a name and number to a surgeon, to get it fixed.

Sage advice: It is important to have the hernia repaired. A hernia is basically a hole in the abdominal wall, and what can pooch through and potentially get stuck and strangulate is intestine. If the doctor had not been able to push the hernia contents back in, you would likely have had urgent surgery to remove the contents from the hernia and repair it. Avoid this development and have your hernia repaired

I'm 32 yrs old. Had my tubes tied 5 months ago. I have a umbilical hernia. Don't see doc for 3 wks. What makes it worse? And is back pain a symptom.

Umbilical/incisional: Are you saying the umbilical hernia is from the umbilical incision for the tubal ligation? You should definitely see your doctor who did the surgery and follow up on that. You may need surgery to fix the hernia. Ignoring it makes the situation worse. Weight gain makes it worse. If the original surgeon is slow to response, condsider getting a second opinion from another surgeon!
