Keep hydrated: The most important thing is to make sure your child stays hydrated. Give her small sips of water frequently. If she doesnt' want to eat solid food don't force it. She should be urinating at least every 8 hours and if she isn't please make an appt with your pediatrician to get her checked out. ...Read more

My son had croup 2 days ago. My daughter today has a high fever, no coughing, but she vomitted once. Could it be the same virus or is it totally different. Will I have both a gastro and parainfluenza going through our home?

Likely same virus: Most probably it is the same virus infection in both the children. Fevers : Fevers for the most part aren't dangerous and are just the body's natural reaction to fighting off an infection. Most of these infections are viral and may be accompanied by runny nose, sore throat, congestion, mild rash, or nothing at all. Since fevers aren't dangerous, we usually treat the fever with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen just to make the child more comfortable as their body fights the illness. "red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are: -fevers that last 5 days or more -fevers persistently above 104f orally -a child that acts very sick - very irritable or difficult to wake -difficulty breathing -vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration -a purple rash, esp on the legs -stiff neck -any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint as always, use your judgement. If you think that your child is ill, err on the side of caution and call your child's doctor. My daughter has had a stomach virus started 2 days agoand puking and diarrhea but said just a virus. What do I need to give her to keep her hydrated?

Any fluids: Preferably something with electrolytes, although she may do well with coke or pepsi with the carbonation out. Whatever she can hold down will be good, but watch carefully and if she is not peeing regularly, her mouth looks dry, her skin tents when you pinch it, or anything else makes you think she is becoming dehydrated should make you get her to an er for IV fluids. Be safe. Hope she is better. ...Read more

My 14 month old grand dau has RSV serious case what is it how to cure it please thank you barb she also has asthma and just got over pnuemona last month

I'm : I'm so sorry she has RSV on top of her other problems! sounds like she's had a rough winter! rsv stands for respiratory syncytial virus - it is the most common cause of an illness in infants and small children called bronchiolitis. Unfortunately, since it is a virus, there are no specific treatments for it - it just has to run its course. We try and provide supportive care to the child who has it depending on what they need - anything from a humidifier and a bulb suction for mucus, breathing treatments, and/or even hospitalization, close monitoring and oxygen for the children who are very ill. If you are concerned about your granddaughter's breathing or if she is refusing to drink, call her pediatrician. Below i've attached a website with more in-depth information about rsv. Good luck! ...Read more

Avoid sugars found: in fruit juice (esp apple juice) and regular milk, but if he likes milk, give him Lactose reduced milk, such as Lactaid. give water or electrolyte solutions such as Gatorade or Pediatlyte or diluted soda Complex carbs found in breads and pasta are usually well tolerated as well as lean meats, hence the "chicken noodle soup" recommendation. Probiotics sometimes help. If not urinating, see doc. ...Read more

Neonatal illness: The immune system of newborns, especially those under 2 months, is very undeveloped and ineffective at containing infections. For this reason, illness in this age group should be taken very seriously. Simple infections can quickly lead to severe illness, and even death. Best to have your baby evaluated by a physician ASAP. My daughter 1yrold has tb and is on meds. If she gets cured are there chances that she can get this again? What to do?

Need close follow up: The tb germ is very hard to kill and very resistant to drugs so it is important to use multiple drugs which work together to kill the bacteria and Rx for a long time. It is best to have the active bacteria to culture for resistance and repeat cultures should have no growth at 3 months.
