I have a gash on my arm. I have gotten two stitches. The doctor left the dead skin alone and I have it in the middle of my wound. What will happen?

"Biological Bandaid": In many instances the dead skin can act as a biological "band-aid" as long as it remains clean and sterile beneath the dead skin. Increased redness or drainage with any odor requires treatment and possible surgical debridement and removal. It will likely heal with a scar that depends on the location, depth, and amount of dead tissue. Keep in close follow-up, with your physician and report changes. ...Read more

You : You could be having a reaction to whatever was put on the wound yesterday, but the first thing i would be concerned about is it becoming infected. Infection would cause swelling, and in the presence of a compression dressing, this would certainly increase your pain on top of the usual pain from an infection. If your doctor has office hours today, i would recommend you go there and wait, because he really must see you today. If he has no hours, call his office and let them know you're going to the er, preferably at the same hospital he or she is doing surgery today, so he or she can pop down to the er between cases and have a look. Good luck. Hope this helped. ...Read more

I stepped on a rusty nail today that punctured my foot the puncture site is throbbing. Do i need to go to doctor? My last tetnus shot was in 2008?

Close Observation: That nail went through many layers of tissue and each layer heals at a different rate. Skin heals quickly, the deep tough connective tissues takes a lot longer. Minimize strenuous activity for at least a week and progress slowly. There is no way to prevent infection so forget antibiotics. Observe and get help for fevers, increasing redness/drainage/pain. Your tetanus is ok for 5 more years. ...Read more

I : I agree wholeheartedly with dr. Christensen's answer, and would like to add my own thoughts. It's been my experience too many doctors, of all specialties, get hung up on treatment of leg and foot ulcers instead of focusing attention on the cause. An ulcer is a symptom, not a disease. The key to the successful closure of an ulcer is to address the underlying cause. For instance: chronic venous insufficiency from varicose veins can cause an ulceration on the inner lower 1/3 of the leg. Since the underlying cause is blood stagnation, the blood needs help fighting gravity, so compression dressings are the most helpful. Diabetic foot ulcers over pressure points are the result of pressure and a lack of sensation. Thus, the treatment must address pressure above all. Chronic high blood pressure can produce leg ulcers on the outside of the lower legs. It doesn't matter what sort of goo is applied to these ulcers. To close them, the hypertension must be adequately addressed. Ulcers that arise from ischemia (lack of blood circulation) will only close if the poor circulation is addressed. In short, if the underlying cause of the ulcer is properly addressed, you could put mayonnaise on it and it will close. Likewise, if the underlying cause of an ulcer is not addressed, all the topical dressings, honey, antibiotics or the latest "miracle" dressing won't make a difference. So my unsolicited $0.02 here is to find someone who will take the time and effort to make a diagnosis as to why you've ulcerated. That is the key to closing this thing. ...Read more

I had surgrey on my arm from a tetnus shot . They had to cut it and drain it. Now I have blisters around where the bandage was.

Go back to your : surgeon to check if the blisters represent a superficial skin infection or if they are a local reaction to the tape. You could have had a sterile abscess, but any wound, surgical or otherwise, can get infected while healing. ...Read more

I cut my wrist really bad about four days ago and now i have a green looking skin in the center of the wound. I've been using antibiotic ointment?

A doctor should look: at this promptly. If you have already seen a doctor about it I suggest contacting their office for instructions. If you have not seen a doctor, it sounds like now is good time to have it checked. You may need to have the wound cleaned out and dressed by a professional, or you may need other medical treatment. Also, if you have not had a tetanus vaccine in the last 6 years, it's time. Take care! ...Read more

I burned the sole of my foot with a charcoal. Infected with 12-hours - antibiotics. Now the joint on top of my foot hurts. Should I go back to doctor?

I subscribe to: The theory that anytime there is a change in the condition I want my patient to inform me. I never get mad at a patient for asking me something but do if they don't and then something happens.....so, call them. Burns/infections need to be monitored closely....is your tetanus history up to date? Did you get a tetanus booster? ...Read more

My daughter burned the palm of her hand with the iron, should I pop the blister and get the puss out?

No: No. Leave it alone. The immune system is doing that on its own. Pus means the infection is being dealt with. If you pop it, you will increase the chance of another infection, bleeding, and scarring. If it doesnt get better on its own, see a doctor. ...Read more

I believe I punctured a vein on the top of my foot. The skin was punctured and now the surrounding area is very swollen and bruised. What should I do?

Stop the Flow.: Initially, apply ice, or an ice pack to the area. Mild compression and elevation(higher than your heart) will help stem the tide. Later, after the swell goes down, some moist heat, will help dissipate the bruising. Make sure that the cause of the puncture is not an immediate cause of concern for an infection, so keep an eye out. ...Read more

I got stitches in my eyebrow in the ER because i got a cut over my eye now the white part of my eye is filled with blood clots what do I need to do?

See your eye doctor: This is likely not a cause for concern. After a trauma to the eye, it is common for blood vessels in the white of the eye to break. This looks worse than it is. However, you should see an eye doctor to make sure you didn't suffer any more serious injury. ...Read more
