Should my baby poop after every feeding?

Should my baby poop after every feeding?

No: Stooling patterns for infants are very different from adults. Some newborns poop after every feed (yes that can mean 8 times a day!). Some breastfed babies, however, absorb all the nutrients in the milk and can go up to a week without a poopey diaper. As long as your baby is gaining weight well, his stool is soft, there's no blood in the diaper and the stool isn't a white color its probably ok. Read more

3 months old infant. Recently changed formula from 'novalac' to 'NAN' pooping continuously after every fed. Is it normal?

Common: In infants it is common for them to have a bowel movement after each feed. Most important is to see if the child is behaving and responding well. If baby is sucking well, feeding well, has no vomiting, smiles and is active, there is no cause for concern. But if you remain worried take the baby to a pediatrician to have the baby checked. 1 month old, formula feed infant has dark green poop that smells like skunk (sometimes stringy looking)...baby is gassy as well. Is this normal?

Could be: The first thing I would want to make sure is that your child is gaining weight appropriately and thriving. If that is the case, there are numerous things that could be of help, such as different formulas. That decision can be best made with your child's doctor who will know what formula your child is and/or has been on. Good luck. Read more

Is constipation in babies normal? My 1 month old girl has constipation and doesn't poop every day and her stomach feels hard?

Is constipation in babies normal? My 1 month old girl has constipation and doesn't poop every day and her stomach feels hard?

What is constipation: In a one month breast fed baby no poop for a few days is normal as long as the poop in not hard. Babies in the first month or so have frequents pooh so this change to less frequent pooh causes much worry but is normal regardless on apparent straining. At this age babies also have periods of unexplained crying which sometimes are attributed to gas or trouble with pooh. This is not the case! Read more

Why did my 3 1/2 mo old breast fed babies poop smell different (almost a medicinal smell!) when on erythromycin eye ointment for eye infection?

Why did my 3 1/2 mo old breast fed babies poop smell different (almost a medicinal smell!) when on erythromycin eye ointment for eye infection?

Hard to say: This could be a situation where antibiotic somehow got on the baby's hand and made its way into the GI tract, OR, possibly something you are eating in your diet could be affecting the poop. The only thing that will prove what caused this is whether the funny poop smell is gone after the eye treatment is stopped for a week or so... Read more

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. Read more

What causes poop to be green in some babies?

What causes poop to be green in some babies?

Normal: The stool color is provided by the bile from the liver that is adds to fecal debris. It starts out a deep green & changes thru greens to yellows to browns as the germs in the intestines metabolize the bile. Green generally means the stool in question moved through faster or was subject to less change by gut germs. Read more

Is it mandatiry for all hospitals to test babies first poop?

Is it mandatiry for all hospitals to test babies first poop?

Not necessarily: Unless there is reason to test it it will go in the trash. A past history of drug abuse by a mother, protective service surveillance, or babies with withdrawal symptoms would all prompt such a study. Hospitals do make sure babies have had their first poop before going home. Read more
