See primary: None of this sounds good. The patient, who seems to be a 5 year old male with asthma and CP, is obviously still fairly ill or under the weather. After 10 days antibiotics and appropriate asthma treatment, I'd expect the cough to be much better and the child to be perking up, not fatigued. See his doc. He likely needs a chest X-ray and a thorough exam to rule out refractory pneumonia or worse. ...Read more

I'm wondering why are babies vaccinated against whooping cough when they are a few months old?

I'm wondering why are babies vaccinated against whooping cough when they are a few months old?

To avoid death: The newborn will not develop protective antibodies to whooping cough if immunized at birth & maternal antibodies are usually weak. However, it begins to have that ability by 6-8 weeks when the first vaccine is given.Whooping cough fatalities are >60% in infants under 6 months of age.The young can develop progressive respiratory distress & cough hard enough to have a stroke. You shouldn't wait. ...Read more

Does the whooping cough vaccine transmit to infant through breastmilk?

Does the whooping cough vaccine transmit to infant through breastmilk?

No: In order to give the infant protection from the vaccine being given to you, it would have to have been given while the baby was inside, in utero. Now, the baby can get immunity through his/her own vaccination only. Of course, you and any caregiver who comes in close contact with baby should have updated vaccine. That is, anyone holding the baby. ...Read more

Can I use abuterol sulfat and infant Advil (ibuprofen) with my 8 months old? He is wheezing and his head is a little bit hot (forehead 101f for 2 days straight).

Yes: You can use both medications. It is advisable to treat the fever when it is more than 101, and to follow up with your physician. Keeping the baby well hydrated and using the albuterol for hacking cough and wheezing helps to relieve bronchospasm. At this age a spacer device or nebulizer is used to help deliver the medication to the lungs. If the fever or cough/wheezing persists, please see your M.D ...Read more

2m baby with wheezing, is it ok to use salbutamol syrup or nubelizer for him

Yes: Salbutamol is a bronchodilator that is used to relieve spasm in the muscle of the airways. I do not like the syrup because i always find it is better to directly deliver the medication to the airways via the nebulizer. Of course, there are many 2 month olds who wheeze for other reasons bedside airway spasm. If there is no improvement with the meds, other diagnoses should be investigated by the doc. ...Read more
