How long do babies keep their fists clinched before its abnormal?

How long do babies keep their fists clinched before its abnormal?

The fisting subsides as they begin to have the ability to open it (2-3m) and then grab & release by 3-5m. Constant fisting after that time would be considered abnormal. ...Read more

My baby will be 5 months on april 9th she still has her fist closed most of the time! is that normal still?

Should be able to...: She should be able to open her hand to let go of something she is holding, and batting at objects, perhaps even starting to reach towards things, maybe grabbing them if she comes across them, usually bringing them to her mouth, esp more towards 5-6 months. She should be able to do these things pretty equally with both hands. If she's not, i'd check with her dr. To make sure her development is ok. ...Read more

My 1 1/2 month baby, always clench her fist, does that mean she's in pain?

My 1 1/2 month baby, always clench her fist, does that mean she's in pain?

No: This is a natural reflex in an infant under 3-4 mo. The nervous system gradually matures & by 6m the baby can reach out, grasp & release. But early on the fingers will clinch up in response to anything touching the palm. The toes do a similar thing & will curl in around your finger if you touch the bottom of the foot near the toes. ...Read more

Can the tucking of my baby's thumbs in her fists be associated with neurodevelopmental issues? She is 6 weeks.

Can the tucking of my baby's thumbs in her fists be associated with neurodevelopmental issues? She is 6 weeks.

Maybe, maybe not: Fisting is common in the first couple of months as a reflex in the newborn & often can be triggered bu the lightest touch on the palm or just happen. This brings the fingers & thumb in to a clutched position. By 3-4 mo the baby will have the hand open more & the reflexive grasp gives way to a purposeful grasp.A hard inward deviation of the thumb that will not relax is a problem ...Read more

My premature baby is now at 8 weeks adjusted age. He has clenched fists and curled toes most of the time, he is stiff yet floppy should I worry yet?

Sounds normal: Infants often quickly clench their hand to age 4 months and toes to a year. If never unclenched it is abnormal. You are likely to worry to age five just because premi's do that to moms sometimes. Your pediatrician should be monitoring these issues. I routinely sent premi's that early to early childhood programs for closer monitoring. ...Read more
