My Asthma Is Worse After Eating
Inhalers not helping & fluid beginning to build up in lungs after eating causing me to gasp and cough. Could asthma be a misdiagnosis?
See a doctor: Whatever the cause of your symptoms, they are not controlled. See a doctor ASAP for proper diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more
Why do I always have shortness of breath after eating, in mid night and when overly tired? I have no asthma.
Reflux: The most likely cause of your breathing problem is gastro-esophageal reflux or what is common. Y called heartburn. Going to bed with a full stomach increases the likely-hood that acid from the stomach can leak into the esophagus and cause chest symptoms including cough, chest tightness and voice change. Treatment includes antacids, h-2 blockers and protein-pump inhibitors. ...Read more
Lots of coughing after eating a popcicle. I am diagnosed with asthma but I suspect I may have vocal cord dysfunction too. Sound like VCD?
Asthma symptoms aggravated after eating raw onions. Cooked onions ok. Vinegar and sauerkraut can cause symptoms. Any other foods to avoid? Allergy?
Not necessarily: It sounds like these acidic and irritating foods may be just irritating your airways. This doesn't necessarily mean that you're allergic to them, although you should probably still avoid them or pre-treat with your asthma inhaler prior to indulging. See an allergist to be properly tested to ensure this isn't an allergy that is emerging and proceed as they suggest. ...Read more
What makes you tired after eating? I have GERD and asthma On 40 mg protonix (pantoprazole) 2 x day. Feeling weak and tired after eating and during the day. What itbe?
Not usually related: Feeling tired after eating isn't a common symptom or complaint. Eating a large meal can induce a feeling of sleepiness but if you feel this problem is out of the normal of what would be expected I would consult with your primary doctor in person. I don't think this is related to GERD or asthma. ...Read more
Did bloodwork after eating lunch had high results on alkaline phos 195 sgot(ast)and sgft(alt) take alergy shots and asthma meds?
Need more info: What were the actual values of ALT and AST. Alk phos of 195 by itself is not that dangerous. Small intestine makes alk phase and releases it into blood. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your tests need to repeated after an overnight fast. ...Read more
I take prednisone 40mg daily for asthma flair up. I took my blood sugar 20-30 min after eating cookies and popcorn it was 208. Should I worry?
High Blood Sugar: Worry is not a productive emotion. But 208 is a very high blood sugar. Prednisone definitely will cause elevations of blood sugar, but you need to be evaluated. Having your height and weight would be useful also to estimate your diabetes risk. I would eliminate all sweets and recheck blood sugar. Don't forget to use exercise to lower blood sugar when your breathing is better. ...Read more
Can a food intolerance in an asthmatic person cause chest tightness and shortness of breath. Especially after eating non-IGE tested food by SPT?
While eating a pickle I laughed and inhaled some juice. I felt it and I tried to cough but not sure it came out. I have wheeze two days later and cough with clear sputum. Asthma seems worse. No fever. Worried its pneumonia?
Not surprising: Vinegar is very irritating to the lung and thus it is not surprising that you ended up with a cough. As for the asthma, has it responded to bronchodilator? If you are improving, I think you can give it a couple more days to see how things go. However, if there is no response to bronchodilator or your coughing gets worse, you need to see your doctor ...Read more
Difficulties: Difficulty breathing, increased cough, increased wheezing, trouble sleeping or cough at night, decreased exercise tolerance (you can't do as much), and so on. If you measure your breath, you may have a decrease in the amount you can forcibly breath out. If you have pulmonary function testing done, it shows more airway obstruction (usually). More importantly, you feel worse. ...Read more
Yes, possible: Either due to the condition itself, if decompensated heart failure, symptoms can mimic/exacerbate asthma, or due to medicines used to manage heart failure as beta blockers, need to follow up closely with your doctor and go through the list of medicines, symptoms and triggers, wish you wellness ...Read more

Yes: Yes, seasonal allergies can definitely make your asthma worse, especially if you have IgE or allergic induced asthma. Make sure your allergies and asthma are both well controlled with daily nasal sprays and inhaled sprays. Maximizing control of both upper and lower airways will keep you from progressing to a full-blown exacerbation. See Allergist for further workup and evaluation. ...Read more
Depends: On your severity I believe. Both can cause serious illness in but PCD can cause problems in multiple organ systems, so in that sense, PCD may be considered a more severe disease in some, again depending on the severity of their disease. ...Read more
For some: Probably up to 10% of the patients with severe persistent asthma may have aspirin-exacerbated-respiratory disease. Severe asthma may be triggered on this group with the common nsaids (cox 1). It is likely the genetic make-up in a person that has made him sick from taking nsaids. Thus, the answer would be that NSAID per se triggers but not causes asthma which would go on even without nsaids. ...Read more
Use with caution: The antihistamine products like benedryl will thicken your mucous secretions which can be a problem for those on the margins with asthma. Asthma patients tend to have problems with excess secretions already & thickening them lakes it harder for them to be cleared from the airways. Benedryl can often be used during periods of good control, but I avoid it during flares. ...Read more
See your allergist: The best way to tell if your asthma is worsening is with testing — spirometry will show whether your lung function is declining, and a feno test, if available, may show signs of inflammation in the lungs even before it becomes significant enough to affect lung function. Stopping the Pulmicort is another way to tell, but if the cough is caused by worsening asthma, that will make it get even worse. ...Read more
Is cough variant asthma driven by inflammation? My child's is chronic but is worse in fall/winter?
Yes: As stated above, asthma involves inflammation of the airways and subsequent spasm and narrowing causing cough and/or wheezing. Allergies can definitely trigger asthma symptoms in some children, so an antihistamine such as Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec is worth a try. Asthma can also be triggered by cold weather and viral illnesses such as colds. Talk to your pediatrician about what options are best. ...Read more
Why does my asthma get worse at night my throaht feels clogged with mucus and the cough is very deep?
Nocturnal Asthma: There is a natural tendency for airway swelling and constriction to increase at night, due to the normal nighttime fall in hormones that suppress inflammation, the so-called diurnal rhythm. There is also a greater tendency for secretions to pool in the larger airways when you are lying down and breathing is more shallow. Adjusting asthma meds in the evening and adding expectorants may help. ...Read more
I have had asthma for several years. It seems to be getting worse. Could it be from scarring in my lungs?
I went from smoking cigerettes to smoking an electronic one can this still affect my asthma and make it worse?
Possibly: The e-cig is probably better than the regular cigarettes- less tar and other pollutants. BUT it still has nicotine and other chemicals in the fluid which may or may not irritate your lungs. Not very much research has been done on these to know for sure. If you can, use the e-cig to gradually wean yourself off of nicotine entirely. That would be best for your health! ...Read more

Sound sick. : It does sins like you have an acute infection atop your chronic asthma. Perhaps an upper respiratory infection or sinusitis.
