RICE: Rice therapy stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Compression can be achieved with a neoprene ankle sleeve or ace wrap and elevation should be above the level of your heart. If the swelling does not subside within 2-3 weeks you need to see a foot and ankle specialist.

My fathers ankle has been swollen for over a few weeks, he says it doesn't hurt but it looks as if it is out of place. What can it possibly be?

Read below: The swelling may be due to a mild ankle sprain, lymphedema (swelling of the lymp nodes to the area) or the veins not being efficient to drain the swelling out of the area, or possibly a soft tissue growth. See your doctor or podiatrist for a more definitive answer.

My left ankle has been swollen the past couple of weeks. I have not had an injury and am not experiencing pain. Fluid buildup? Thyroid related?

Unlikely: Unilateral ankle swelling is not related to thyroid disease. If there is pain and/or tenderness it is more likely inflammatory than mere fluid retention. Have your doctor take a look.

There: There are different issues that can cause ankle and foot pain. Trauma of course is the best known, but it sounds like there is no history of trauma. Gout can cause foot and joint pain and swelling; the pain with gout is usually severe and more often just in the foot. Vascular problems, such as thrombosis in the arteries (blood clots) can cause leg pain and swelling. Vein problems from poor circulation can cause chronic venous stasis, where there is little pain but the leg has swelling and discoloration. Other types of arthritis can cause joint swelling. Consulting your physician to determine the cause of your symptoms would be a reasonable next step.

Should my ankle still be swollen 2 weeks after spraining it?

Should my ankle still be swollen 2 weeks after spraining it?

Tes...: This is nowhere near enough time for the swelling from the injury to subside. The area may remain swollen for months but it will eventually go away, but very gradually.

Broke ankle 15 weeks ago. Today my ankle is so swollen and spongey.. . edema.. . . what should I do?

Broke ankle 15 weeks ago. Today my ankle is so swollen and spongey.. . edema.. . . what should I do?

Elevate: Swelling after an ankle fracture can persist for months after the injury. 'Edema', swelling etc. Is best helped by elevating the affected extremity (foot/ ankle) above heart level (mid- chest)and application of an ice compress acutely. With time swelling tends to dissipate; if it persists see your ORS for evaluation and other options (TED hose, Jobes comp. Etc.) good luck!

Twisted my ankle 5 weeks ago, still swollen and can't rotate it properly. Still clicks and gives way. What do you think has happened?

Twisted my ankle 5 weeks ago, still swollen and can't rotate it properly. Still clicks and gives way. What do you think has happened?

PROPER CARE: What did you do right after the injury? Were you off it for any length of time, or did you resume your normal activities. If you wrapped it in an Ace bandage, that does not provide any support. It could be a stretched, or even torn, ankle ligament. It could be a problem with the large tendons at that level of the ankle. Finally, it could be a bone problem. You should start w/ xrays. Dr. Latva

My ankles have been really swollen for weeks now. My Bp pill with water pill built In does not seem to be working. What could b cause?

Many things: High there - swollen legs (also known as edema in the legs), and be caused by a range of conditions ranging from failure of the heart to pump correctly, kidney disease, liver disease, low protein in the blood, blood clots, etc. You need to see the doctor. And, you are on a low dose of water pill, so you may need a higher dose.

My husband broke 8, 9, 10th rib in his back a week ago. Now his feet and ankles are swollen. He said they feel picky. Why would they be swollen?

My husband broke 8, 9, 10th rib in his back a week ago. Now his feet and ankles are swollen. He said they feel picky. Why would they be swollen?

Emergency: His worries me a lot. Edema in the lower extremities usually means a heart problem. Broken ribs with a complication causing heart failure makes me want to send you to the er urgently. If he is comfortable, and able to speak in full sentences you may want to page the family doctor first. But please, if he appears ill or in any kind of stress get to the er!

I have had a swollen ankle for 4 weeks and the pain has moved from the inside of the ankle to the heel and outside of the ankle. What should I do?

I have had a swollen ankle for 4 weeks and the pain has moved from the inside of the ankle to the heel and outside of the ankle. What should I do?

Ankle edema: If your ankle is swollen for four weeks, you should be seen by a podiatrist who will exam you, take x-rays, order blood tests and evaluate your condition. The pain moving from the inside of an ankle to the heel then up the leg sounds like a possible nerve entrapment.

Both my ankles and feet have been swollen for over a week! The tops of my feet feel like pins everytime I take a step! This is the second time in 2yrs?

Needs work up: Swelling of both feet and ankles requires a through investigation. Most likely it is due to fluid retention (edema) it is also possible to have an inflammation of the ankle joint (less likely). Minimum investigation requires history, physical examination and urine test.

Possibly however: The increased bruising may mean more damage whether it is soft tissue or bone. Generally if you can walk and apply full weight on the ankle than it probably is not broken however avulsion fractures of the distal fibula can occur which can complicate things. Best to see a specialist for x-rays when in doubt.

Why is my ankle still swollen 7 weeks after a fall!?

Why is my ankle still swollen 7 weeks after a fall!?

Depends on what: Grade of sprain it was and what treatment you got. Swelling is normal after any injury but more so to foot and ankle due to gravity. Elevation will help and people tend to heal at different rates so if it persists see your doctor.

My ankle is still swollen after rolling it 3 weeks ago but there is no pain at all and can put weight on it?

My ankle is still swollen after rolling it 3 weeks ago but there is no pain at all and can put weight on it?

Swelling is natural: Ankle joint swelling following a mild or moderate sprain is common. It can last a lot longer than you think. It's fortunate that you do not have pain, but natural for it to be still swollen at three weeks. Be patient. Swelling typically resolves at 12 to 16 weeks, but can last longer with recurrent sprains or chronic ankle joint problems. At your age, this likely will not be a future problem.
