I've begun potty training my 3 year old daughter, but she fearful & is holding it for a long time (one day for 18 hours). What can I do to help her?

Several things: First, the ability to be toilet trained depends on neurological maturation. Second, toilet training is a skill that is easily shaped through positive reinforcement. Failures should be ignored and successes praised. Putting too much emphasis on the toilet training and failures can increase the child's resistance. Most children learn this skill easily if done in a relaxed manner. ...Read more

How do I explain to my 3 year old when he asks me why is my penis big? I started potty training and he is asking so many questions

How do I explain to my 3 year old when he asks me why is my penis big? I started potty training and he is asking so many questions

Short simple answers: A 3 yo is curious and their questions can be difficult when you let the issue of genitals/sex cloud the picture. At that age short simple answers are the best. Don't launch into lengthy discussions. "that's how it is"is honest & developmentally appropriate.Expect the same ? Seveal times (they don't take notes). After he gets to 7-8 the questions can be answered in more depth. ...Read more

I am potty training my 3 year old who has a strong personality. The only method that has worked is by having her naked. She still bed wets. Any advice?

Put her clothes on: If you have done rehearsal & she knows where the stuff is the best thing you can do is become her assistant, not her drill sergeant. A strong willed child must first understand when she gets the feeling she needs to go, & feel happy she is responding to that need.Telling her no more than twice a day that you will help is crucial. You can provide incentives for doing big girl things but relax. ...Read more

Potty training 3yo boy will not poop. Will hold it for 24+hrs. Suggestions?

Let him decide: Only 75% of kids are neurologically ready to be potty trained at 3. If he's ready and you offer an incentive, assistance as needed and let him decide when to go, you just might get there without so many tears. ...Read more

My 3 yo was potty training great until we went away and weren't consistent. He was afraid of self flushing toilets. Now he is resistant to toilet.

My 3 yo was potty training great until we went away and weren't consistent. He was afraid of self flushing toilets. Now he is resistant to toilet.

Put him back in : pull-ups without discussing the issue unless he brings it up, then affirm that those public potties scared him a little, but that he chooses when the potties at home, preschool, etc. flush. Put small, safe toys in a glass bowl on top of the fridge. When he asks what they're for, the say, " Oh, they're for when you choose to pee-pee & poo-poo in the potty." Being casual is key. ...Read more

My 5 yo son has been potty trained for 2 yrs. Since I started potty training my 3yo son, the 5 yo has started having BM and pee accidents. Attention?

My 5 yo son has been potty trained for 2 yrs. Since I started potty training my 3yo son, the 5 yo has started having BM and pee accidents. Attention?

Sounds like it: Sounds like an attention grabber, since mom is spending time with the 2 yo, and all the attention is on potty training, etc. Try and have an activity with the 5yo and when training the 2 you say things like your smarter older brother learned this already and maybe he can show you how to do it, etc. get him involved and praise him for his efforts. Good luck! ...Read more

My 3 yo is potty training. On occasion when urine dries on white potty seat 1 or 2 dots may look a little red. Never red in the toilet. Took OTC UTI test that was negative. Is it just rxn btwn plastic and urine?

Probably not: The dark red/purplish stains on the toilet seat may be from small degree of hematuria or crystals in the urine or the source of the stains may be outside the urinary system, like skin or rectal region. Your child should therefore be examined by the doctor for a better assessment. ...Read more

I gave my three year old son Miralax (polyethylene glycol) once last week to help with mild constipation and his stool has been loose and green for about 5-6 days ever since. Is that normal? Should I be concerned?

I gave my three year old son Miralax (polyethylene glycol) once last week to help with mild constipation and his stool has been loose and green for about 5-6 days ever since. Is that normal? Should I be concerned?

Possibly miralax (polyethylene glycol) : The color of this poo is normal and nothing to worry about. What dose of miralax (polyethylene glycol) did he get? It would not be unusual for miraax to cause several days of loose stools. Is his belly distended? Any blood in the stool? Any exposures to reptiles or family members cooking chitlins? Another alternative to miralax (polyethylene glycol) is mineral oil to soften stools without the associated "blowouts" we see with miralax (polyethylene glycol). ...Read more

My 3 year old son is constipated and has been taking lactulose liquid for a week. What should we do?

My 3 year old son is constipated and has been taking lactulose liquid for a week. What should we do?

Hard to say: Even at 3, a kid could have a stool retention problem that requires a year of therapy and specialized help with a pediatric gastroenterologist. He could also have a brief issue that clears in a week. Without the benefit of a full history, exam & some tests, a realistic answer cannot be given. ...Read more

Diet changes: Increase her water intake. Add more p- fruits like peach, pear, plum, prune, pineapple, papaya, pomegranate, pumpkin, and peas. You can consider smooth move tea (1/3 cup) a day til get her to poop. Vaseline on her anus to keep it from tearing when she needs to pass a large poop.
