Melatonin: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the brain which helps to control sleep rhythms in healthy people. It has been used as a supplement for years by adults with insomnia or shift-work jobs that may interfere with the body's natural circadian rhythm. The use in kids with sleep disorders have grown rapidly in the last few years because of its good safety profile. Lifestyle changes are the best ways to help a child go to sleep at night such as having a bedtime routine involving calm activities before bed, no tv before bed, no caffeine, and placing the child in a dark, quiet room. If these have been tried and do not work, then giving melatonin (1mg to 3mg 30 minutes before bed) for a few days to weeks is considered safe. This can help regulate your child's sleep cycle. If your child is continuing to require melatonin to sleep after a few weeks, then you should discuss this with your child's doctor. Your child may have a medical reason causing them to be unable to sleep such as attention deficit disorder or obstructive sleep apnea. ...Read more

Ok so my 12 year old daughter is always tired and mopey. How much sleep should she get? Or is this just puberty. (has breast buds and discharge)
Sleep needs: A pubertal child should never get less than 9hr sleep/night & during a growth spurt may need more. After she hits her final height /stage she can get by on 8. The sighs you mention suggest she is entering a rapid growth phase. If she is getting good sleep & is still tired she needs an evaluation. Sluggishness at this age can be caused by a variety of issues. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Most doctors are taught that lab results that are in the "reference range" are normal, even when people don't feel well. This may have been the case with your "normal" bloodwork.
Your symptoms of fatigue, muscle pain and weakness could be related to low thyroid function, adrenal fatigue, hormonal imbalances and/or nutrient deficiencies. Especially because your symptoms are getting worse, you need to see a doctor who will run a thorough panel of lab tests, including several thyroid tests (not just a tsh), hormone levels, vitamin levels, and adrenal tests, who will interpret the results correctly in light of your symptoms, and be able to prescribe effective treatment. A comprehensive approach is the most likely to help you feel like yourself again. ...Read more

My girl 3 years old has a fever with no other symptoms. Only fever, feeling fatigue & sleepy. She also refuses eating. What's the reason?
Viral?: Your baby most likely has a viral illness that is causing some nausea so she does not eat. She may have less fatigue after her fever comes down and you can do that with Tylenol (acetaminophen). If she still continues to refuse to eat, try to give her small sips of fluids so she stays hydrated. I think I have a metabolism problem. My dr says everything is ok. I weight 250 and 5 ft 3. I have gained 50 pounds in about a year. I'm always tired to?
Elevated BMI: Your dr probably said all is okay based on normal labs (thyroid, etc). A 50 lb weight ain in 1 yr is clearly abnormal & a multifactorial process is likely at play. Endocrinological causes should be ruled out. Certain medications, depression, sedentary life style (enforced or not), are some of the causes. Work on your diet and instill a regular exercise program until things are figured out. ...Read more
I've had my periods for over a year, and I'm over 2 weeks late. There's no way I'm pregnet as I'm a virgin. I've gained weight and am now always tired.
Weight gain: Is a common reason for abnormal cycles. As you gain weight, your hormones become increasingly abnormal. You could be Insulin resistant (pre-diabetic), which contributes to weight gain. See your gynecologist to discuss. ...Read more
