It depends on cause.: Depending on the height of the fever and severity of the cough, he may need to see the doctor. My 2.7year old son has a bad cold, running nose (mucus) and cough. No fever. Unable to sleep properly since 3-4days now. What medicine to give?

Not much: For a child this young, I would recommend against any prescription cough/cold medications and even over the counter cough/cold meds as these can have significant side effects and are not shown to be effective. Simple home remedies like warm water with honey and lemon before bedtime, breathing in steam in a hot/steamy bathroom before bedtime, and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen for any pain/fever relief. ...Read more

Cough/rhinorrhea and: fever in a toddler is usually caused by a viral infection. Use of OTC cough medication is discouraged. Supportive measures provide relief. 18 mth old with fever & increasing nocturnal cough deserves an evaluation by his pediatrician to screen out treatable conditions / confirm a viral etiology. A reactive airway disease will need to be screened for and addressed if needed. Vaccines current? ...Read more

11month old baby caught with cough and cold. She is having running nose, little fever too. Please suggest the medicine and home remedies both.

URI: Cold and cough preparations are not recommended for 11 month old babies. Nasal congestion can be managed with a gentle saline spray as often as required. A fever may be treated with Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen. She room should be kept cool and not too dry to help with her breathing. Give her extra clear fluids. Follow up with her doctor for any concerns. I hope she feels better soon. ...Read more
