Viral Illness: May be enterovirus or alike. Starts with upper respiratory symptoms with runny nose, cough, sometimes vomiting, and ends with diarrhea. Give pedialyte 4-6 ounces for each diarrhea, continue if you are breast feeding. Food will be mainly: bananna, rice, applesauce, chicken/soup, crackers. For cough can give Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 4 ml twice daily, use steam inhaler or a vaporiser. If cough worse, see his/her doc. ...Read more

Nasal congestion: At 5mo the primary cause of congestion are irritants or colds. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that don't bother adults but irritate a babies nose. Mucinex/Delsym: Many anticough medicines are available otc--such as mucinex, (guaifenesin) delsym, Robitussin etc...Since you don't really have much in term of concerning symptoms, you can try the above meds for a few days. Possibilities...: Possible diagnoses include bronchospasm from any cause, gerd, sinus problems or even a combination of factors. Cough w/ phlegm: Could be you had viral infection and have superimposed bacterial infection, could be post infectious reactive airways when you lie down it is worse because you are compressing lungs. Keep head of bed at 25-45% with pillow under mattress. May need inhaler, also may need antibiotics. Antihistamines before bed may also assist as may have post nasal drip f/u w/doc ...Read more
