My 5 month old acts like he is teething. He is congested and has a bad cough. He isn't sleeping well and seems exhausted. This is day three and there is no fever yet. Whatshould I do?
Nasal congestion: At 5mo the primary cause of congestion are irritants or colds. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that don't bother adults but irritate a babies nose. A good nasal clean out with saline can remove much of this irritant load, but removing the offending irritants from babies life helps more in the long run. Irritants aggravate colds & nasal wash helps. ...Read more

Uncomfortable?: Age? If you are uncomfortable with the way she looks or the way she is acting, you should have her seen. Unless she is wheezing or grunting, in general, it is less important how the cough sounds than how the child looks. If she has a history of asthma or pneumonias, if the cough has been progressing or lasting a week, if her breathing is labored or she appears uncomfortable, have her evaluated. ...Read more

Cough w/ phlegm: Could be you had viral infection and have superimposed bacterial infection, could be post infectious reactive airways when you lie down it is worse because you are compressing lungs. Been having a bad cough producing mucus and sever chest discomfort/ pain. No fever. Runny nose. Could it be acute bronchitis?
Yes: It sounds like you have viral bronchitis. Most cases of bronchitis are caused by respiratory viruses that do not respond to antibiotics. 9yr old has harsh bad cough for over 2 weeks with little congestion no fever feeling fine. Does this require antibiotic? Can't seem to rid cough
Hard to say: Antibiotics are useless in treating cough unless there is a bacterial infection causing it. Some kids with simple viral bronchitis will cough hard for up to a month. Work with the kids doc to see what is going on. Don't assume that antibiotics are needed, although they could be. Sometimes they develop a sinus infection that triggers persistent cough after the initial issue has passed. ...Read more

My 5 month old daughter has had some loose stools. No fever, eating normally, and active. She has a red bottom, relieved with diaper cream. Could it be teething?
I can be hard to determine the exact cause of an infants symptoms... It might be related to teething or it might be a cold. Please monitor your child closely and give palliative care:
1. Cold compresses
2. Children's tylenol (acetaminophen) per the label's directions.
3. Maintain hydration, plain water is ok.
4. Call your pediatrician if the fever increases or persists for more than 3 days. ...Read more
2yrs old has a bad cough low fever took him to dr they say spleen inflamed but just a cold he's not eating but is drinking all he wants to do sleep?
COUGH, LOW GRADE:
Fever, diminished appetite are signs of viral infection. I assume, the pediatrician mentioned some inflammation of 'lung', not spleen. As long as he is drinking well, not to worry. If not better in 5-7 days, or any worsening, check with the pediatrician.

My 6 yr old son had the flu 2 weeks ago. Now he has a bad cough, vomiting and mild fever. Should I take him to the er? He's been sick too long.?
Take him to his doc: If he is not in respiratory distress - not struggling or working hard to breathe, you can wait to see his pediatrician over the next day. Some children get pneumonia with the flu. He will need to get examined and possibly get a chest xray to determine if this is the case. And then he can be treated. If he is in respiratory distress, take him to the er. ...Read more

Been having a runny nose bad cough especially at night, Claritin (loratadine) hasn't been working. No fever, no chills, just cough and runny nose. What should I do?
See doctor: Post-nasal drips is likely the most common cause for a chronic cough but you will need to be checked out for asthma also. Nasal steroid is usually more effective than Claritin in reducing the nasal symptoms -> improvement in your cough if asthma is not present. If your nasal discharge is often discolored, then sinusitis needs be ruled out. ...Read more
