My daughter was just diagnosed with a well defined tumor with its own blood supply in the muscle near her sternum. Is this likely to be malignant?

It could be, need bx: If it is a tumor in the muscle, it could be a muscle cell tumor, such as sarcoma. But it may be within the deep tissues of the skin, and perhaps it is a benign tumor, such as a lipoma. If it is a growth that was not there before, first it needs to be assessed if fluid filled: eg a pus-filled abscess, or a cyst. If not, it needs to be removed and sent for pathology: no guessing, no denying. ...Read more

Could be trapped air: This may sound crazy but I've seen something like this before. In some people if there is a small tear in the lining of the airways or throat air can escape and enter into the tissue. This is known as subcutaneous emphysema. This is more common after some sort of trauma. See your doctor and get appropriate studies. ...Read more

Can x-Rays detect if you have tumors in your leg muscle? One doctor that I asked said usually not, cuz it usually just shows the bone?

Helpful: If a tumor is palpated in the leg, frequently a routine x ray will provide some dimentions and whether bone is compromised. An MRI will give far more detail an the nature of the tumor composition and extent of the growth pattern. When I find a large lesion, probably sarcoma, I have an angiogram performed and if tumor very vascular, prior to surgery, tumor vessels are embolized. ...Read more

I have a brain tumor meningomia it's on the oculmotor. My neuro ophthalmology said my muscle has weaken very minimal does that effect both eyes?

Nucleus or Nerve?: Meningiomas are benign tumors that can occur in the brain. They are locally invasive. Involvement of the oculomotor nucleus within the brainstem would likely affect both eyes. A lesion outside the brainstem along the route of the third nerve would affect only one eye. A neuro-ophthalmic examination would be helpful as would an MRI scan. ...Read more

Muscles?: This is an important case. You did not mention a symptom of numbness. It sounds like the problem could be with your muscles or the motor nerves. That would explain these symptoms. You will want to have blood testing for CPK and other muscle-related markers, and you may want to have an EMG to evaluate further, pending the outcome of your tests. ...Read more
