Just one, however: I'm not sure what you mean by start working- even one will increase the amount of vitamins in your body. The main reasons: your doctor would recommend an additional iron supplement to your prenatal vitamin is that your prenatal vitamin does not contain the recommended amount (30 mg daily) or your iron level was found to be low/you were told you are anemic. OK together but...: Minerals are best absorbed on an empty stomach as adequate stomach acid helps & our stomachs have the most acid when empty. However, stomach acid kills acidophilus, so it's far better to take it after a meal (for some strange reason many probiotic labels say take on empty stomach- they're wrong!). Other than young children, i only advise iron supplements to menstruating women. Iron supplements often cause constipation and GI upset but some forms are better absorbed and tolerated than others. Iron Bis-glycinate is much less likely to cause side effects. Taking Vitamin C with iron also enhances absorption.
