22 month old was constipated & had painful hard BM tonight with red blood and mucus in it. What could cause this?
Stool retention: If they ever decided to hold a stool so they wouldn't have to stop playing & get changed, when they do go it is harder & hurts. Then they try to avoid going & the cycle repeats. The blood is a scratch in the passage way of the anus as a big or firm mass passes. If you get the kid soft it will stop. Mirilax is a good softener. Fix it now or it can become a years long nightmare. ...Read more

My 6 mth old had a small amount of mucus with dark brown hard bm. 27kcal formula, 2tsp of lactulose daily, just started solids, usually constipated?
See Pediatrician: Based on the information given, it sounds as though the child has other health/gi problems- 27 kcal is a very concentrated formula (breast milk and standard formulas are 20kcal/oz) and can contribute to constipation, which I assume is why you're already using lactulose. By itself, mucus in stool may or may not be worrisome, but any changes in premature or previously ill infants need assessment. ...Read more

Constipation issues: Treatment depends on problem (do you have soft or hard stool?), circumstances under which constipation developed (dehydration, low activity, food intolerances, stressful times, ischemic gut, inflammatory colitis, past surgeries/ trauma with adhesions, rectal dysfunction), severity (stool volume, dehydration, how much blood, night-time awakening, weight loss), & duration (acute vs. Longstanding?). ...Read more

Primary care doctor: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. The Dr. Can evaluate and may sometimes prescribe drugs such as Linzess or Amitiza (lubiprostone). ...Read more

Mucus on stool: Mucus discharge occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced in response to partial obstruction, chronic constipation, rectal dysfunction, infection, & even from secretory villous tumors of the rectum. At the very least stool studies & probably a sigmoidoscopy should be considered, but a more extensive evaluation may be warranted. ...Read more
My low part of colon has stingy mild pain, almost at groin. I have semi constipation with few mucus. Not too disturbing been there for1 week I guess?
I'm trying to figure: Out what you mean by pain in "low part of colon." Your large bowel/colon is in your abdomen; we cant know for sure that is causing the pain so I am going to presume you mean very low abdominal pain, near the groin. Then "stingy" is an unusual description of abdominal pain; makes me consider your skin?? With bowel changes, consider irritable bowel and push fluids/fiber/exercise for constipation. ...Read more

Mucus in stool long time, just realized this is bad. Had chronic constipation, changed diet fixed for 3 weeks. Still mucus; Noblood in stool: 4 FOBT?
A small amount ok: I realize it is difficult to estimate "What is a small amount? " Helpful that you improved your constipation with diet, and that there is no blood. Also reassuring that it has been present for a "long time" with no other concerning symptoms. I would say that if it is more than a tablespoon per bowel movement, you should be evaluated. Infection, colitis, and cancer would need to be excluded. ...Read more

Mucous in stool: It is normal to have some mucus in stools, but if it is very noticeable for an extended time, you need to discuss this with your toddler's pediatrician. One thing, if your toddler is constipated on a daily basis, the mucus could be due to that. Mucus in the stool can be due also to infection (due to antibiotic usage?), irritable bowel or an obstruction. See the pediatrician to be sure. ...Read more
