Does mucus production in the body usually increase?

Does mucus production in the body usually increase?

Depends on the need!: Mucus production is actually a defense mechanism to protect our body. When we get exposed to bacteria, viruses, fungus, and irritants in our airway, the surface immune cells lining the tubes of airway and sinuses produce the chemicals that assist in getting rid of the offending agents. If there is a recent need for expelling something from our airway, then our body produces more mucus. ...Read more

Can the body rid itself of mucus without actually coughing it up?

Can the body rid itself of mucus without actually coughing it up?

Not likely: Human body normally makes mucus that lines the respiratory and GI tract. In asthma, the mucus glands are overactive and produce larger amounts of thick mucus. If it is not expelled by coughing, it has the potential to cause mucus plugs leading to atelectasis (block small airways) with collapse beyond the mucus plug. Other diseases with abnormal mucus (CF) or cilia function lead to plugging. ...Read more

What does a jelly like, stretchy cervical mucus means in my body? Is it a sign that egg and sperm finally met?

No: The cervical mucous consistency is determined by the hormones that are dominant in your body at given time in cycle. Your mucous is thinnest during ovulation and thicker at other times in cycle. One can't base pregnancy on mucous consistency. Best is a urine pregnancy test when you miss your period. Mucous is a little like tea-leaves, there's only so much you can read into it. ...Read more

I read, "HIV transmits when HIV infected body fluid comes in directly contact with mucus membrane." what is the exact meaning of "directly contact"?

What it seems to say: Fuid in surface. Even if this happens, the risk is huge if it is semen on a roughed-up mechanically traumatized rectal mucosa, zero if it is saliva on a lip during a kiss. Love safely and wisely and don't read uncritically. ...Read more

Strep about 2 weeks ago& finshed amoxicillin Friday 6th. This week ive started coughing really bad, but no mucus. I've had chils & body aches. Problem?

Unrelated infection: I think it's unrelated -you had Strep and wiped it out with those antibiotics. Now, it's very possible you've acquired a new infection - such as the flu or another infection. Best to try and get a diagnosis from your primary doc or a walk-in - then if it's flu, you can take antivirals. We're having a bad flu season here in the U.S. right now. You have 3 of the symptoms and need a proper diagnosis. ...Read more

Is it likey for HIV be transfered through mucus in the human body such as snot and mouth mucus?

It's not happening: In the old days, kids with hemophilia would live with their families for years, getting the same respiratory infections and snot-going everywhere, and kissing their parents like all normal kids. Not one parent became infected. Stop worrying about this. Life's got enough dangers without fretting and troubling yourself and others over things that don't present real dangers. ...Read more

Can sinusitis cause no mucus to come out of the nose? Will this excess mucus cause infections if spread to other parts of body?

Possible: Although acute sinusitis is often associated with a thick discolored nasal discharge, one may have sinusitis without any discharge at all. The mucus is mostly the body's way to fight against the infection and thus in the case of sinusitis would not spread to other parts of the body. One may need an antibiotic if the problem persists for more than a week or gets worse. ...Read more

Can't keep food in my body. After every meal, I end up running to the bathroom in pain, and its very loose. And there is a lot of mucus in my stool.

Stool urgency: If this is an acute problem, it is most likely due to an infectious cause, most of which resolve spontaneously it a few days. If it is a long-term problem, though, you may have irritable bowel syndrome. If so, try increasing your fiber intake, along with extra fluids. I feel like I've had the body flu for awhile now.... there's blood in my stool and mucus when wipe. I always feel light headed like I'm gonna pass out?

Go In Now: Blood in the stool is a reason to get prompt medical evaluation.
Also, if you have a gastrointestinal bug which causes bloody stools, again is a reason to go in for an evaluation. Only a few causes of gastroenteritis have bloody stool as a finding and may need antibiotics.
Lightheadedness/almost passing out could represent blood loss, or more commonly significant dehydration. ...Read more

I have had for 4 days cough with clear mucus weakness body aches and fatigue and mo appetite is this a virus? And how long before I get my strength an

Probably viral.: We are in the "flu season" and your symptoms sound like a respiratory virus. Generally, with acute illnesses, my rule of thumb is this: However long you've been sick, it will take that much time to feel like yourself again. Of course, factors like age and health influence how quickly we bounce back. If you aren't over the worst symptoms by 7 days, or you get worse, see a doctor. ...Read more
