What is mucosal edema of right maxillary sinus and mucous retention cyst?

Mucous membrane: Often this is from an allergic reaction. If the thickening is significant, one needs to consider an infection in the sinuses. Do note that pregnancy itself can cause nasal congestion (especially if you have never had nasal symptoms prior to your pregnancy). ...Read more

Please translate: "mucous retention cyst in right maxillary sinus. Bulbous mucosal thickening of left inferior turbinate is noted. Mucosal retention cyst is also noted within left aspect of nasopharynx."

Antral cyst: It is a common condition related to allergic rhinitis. In general, no surgical treatment is needed unless the cyst are very large and obstructing the outflow tract of the sinus. The enlarged inferior turbinate is a result of allergy. It can be treated with medication or surgery. ...Read more

Can a mucous retention cyst in the left maxillary sinus cause headaches, double vision and selling around the eyes?

Can a mucous retention cyst in the left maxillary sinus cause headaches, double vision and selling around the eyes?

Most would not: A number of mucus retention cysts are often first diagnosed as asymptomatic findings on panoramic radiographs taken in a dental office. If a mucus retention cyst is large enough whereby it occupies enough volume in the maxillary sinus, it could potentially contribute to all of the symptoms you are inquiring about. Further evaluation of your symptoms would be recommended. ...Read more

I have a mucous retention cyst or polyp in maxillary sinus. Is there any relation to my pituitary tumor or to the fact that I have always had a poor sense of smell?

I have a mucous retention cyst or polyp in maxillary sinus. Is there any relation to my pituitary tumor or to the fact that I have always had a poor sense of smell?

Unrelated entities: A pituitary tumor plays no role in the development/formation of a mucous retention cyst, or a sinus polyp. These are quite common, an usually asymptomatic (unless they block the drainage from the sinus into the hiatus semilunaris or if they are occupying a large volume of the sinus) and I see them as an incidental finding on a weekly basis on radiographs of my patients. ...Read more

I have a large mucous retention cyst in my sinus cavity. What is this, would it cause the headaches I've been having lately, and what's the treatment?

I have a large mucous retention cyst in my sinus cavity. What is this, would it cause the headaches I've been having lately, and what's the treatment?

We see them often: Causes of retention cysts are unknown; as much as we think allergy plays a role others appear to have no association.. Usually they aren't painful themselves; but they can enlarge, block passages and contribute to formation of sinus infections, similar to nasal polyps. Headaches? Maybe. Depends. Usually not. Options: oral steroids, surgery, allergy shots; some recommend do nothing. See ENT. ...Read more

Ct results: minor mucosal changes in the paranasal sinuses seen in the maxillary sinus regions with mucous retention cysts. Possible cause?

Not to worry: I see a fair proportion of my patients demonstrating these in their sinuses as an incidental finding on ct scan. They very rarely require any sort of surgical intervention and should be differentiated from a mucocele (which are different. Allergies, sinusitis, mucosal irritation lead to these fluid filled "sacs". ...Read more

Got a mucus retention cyst in sinus CT scan blocking sinus partially. What are the treatments to remove it or dissolve it? Suffering from post nasal dip

Not necessary to: Remove a mucous retention cyst is not necessarily the cause of your sinus problems. I take ct scans all day and we see a lot of mucous retention cysts with little correlation to symptoms. If you are going to have it out just know that your symptoms will probably not improve. Many university radiologists that read scans will advise against treatment because of the high reoccurrence rate ...Read more

Small mucous retention cyst in the left sphenoid sinus what can be the cause?

Small mucous retention cyst in the left sphenoid sinus what can be the cause?

Retention cyst: Hello, cysts are commonly found within the paranasal sinuses. It is believed that they occur from an occlusion of an outflow tract from a mucus secreting gland. This gland continues to produce mucus and before long it swells like a water balloon. These cysts can be varying sizes and as long as they don't occlude the sinus ostea, they are just identified and observed. No surgery is needed. ...Read more

I was diagnosed after MRI with prominent adenoid pad and tiny mucosal retention cyst in both maxillary sinus. What are my options?

Symptoms?: Why was the MRI done? If you are having nasal obstruction or obstructive sleep apnea, your ENT doc may recommend removal of the adenoids. If no nasal obstruction of concern about the adenoid tissue being a tumor, I would think no treatment necessary.
The mucus retention cysts of the maxillary sinuses usually do not require treatment unless the doc suspects another diagnosis. ...Read more

Ct results1mild mucosal thickening involving the ethmoid air cells and small mucous retention in the left maxillary sinus.2small concha bullosa bilaterally without ostiomeatal stenosis. Please explain?

Sinus CT: Concha bullosa are common anatomic variants of bones in the nasal cavity. When they are large, they can obstruct the sinus drainage pathway and predispose to sinusitis. When small, usually of no concern. Small mucus retention cysts and mild mucosal thickening may be related to mild chronic sinusitis. However, these mild findings may not even cause noticeable symptoms. ...Read more
