Pediatrician advised to give my 21 month old 24 pound daughter 1 TSP dimetapp cold and cough childrens. Is this okay?
Old medication: This is a product sold by prescription 3 decades ago but available over the counter for the last 2. It underwent a formulation change about 10 yrs ago, reducing its strength. At about the same time most realized these products have little value and advised against use under 6. I find this dose a little heavy, by double (when used for allergies). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 6 month old baby has been nose congested for 3 months now & snores at night, tried humidifier, saline drops, is it allegies? Can he take decongestant?
Not the best: Over the counter cold medicines are no longer recommended for children, because studies have not shown that they really help, and they often cause side effects. You should see your child's doctor to figure this out since it has lasted so long. It would be unusual to have this much trouble with allergies so young but there is a simple ige blood test to check for allergies. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Cough: Maybe so , maybe not. Depends on the child, why he/she is coughing and the cough syrup. There are many illnesses that cause cough. Best to see your doctor about any significant cough so that the cause is found and proper medicine can be given. For minor coughs honey in hot herb tea is soothing for children over 1 year of age. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Steamy shower: The coughs in infants are very difficult to deal with. There are not any medicine over the counter recommended for under 2 years. Sometimes steaming up the shower stall and having your baby breath the warm mist is helpful. A humidifier or vaporizer may help also particularly in the winter. But i would see your pediatrician to see if its only a cold or some other cause. ...Read more

No: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants trigger cough.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from baby's environment & this will happen less.No cough syrup!!! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

6 month old that's wheezing, coughing and nasal drainage. Pediatrician only gave an albuterall inh with chamber mask. She isn't getting better. Help?
Difficult condition: Infectious wheezing is difficult in infants and may have little early response to any therapy.I use nebulizers at this age rather than inhalers /chambers, but even these don't assure improvement. If the kid is taking fluids well enough to pee every 4-6 hours you can continue treatment and monitor at home.Id drinking slows or stops, the kid needs to be evaluated.Occasionally these need IV fluids, 02. ...Read more
I wouldn't: I consider this product more an airway irritant than health aid for any kid under 6 years of age. An infant has partial dependence on their nasal airway for breathing and any fragrance, pleasant or not, can plug them up. Any medicinal quality (the medicine smell) is more myth than real at any age.The indians used pine pitch to scent their sweat lodges, and this product mimics the practice. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
