Mri (Definition)

Mri or magnetic resonance imaging is one of the more recently developed imaging modalities available to physicians. It uses powerful magnets to generate images. There is no ionizing radiation which is a major advantage over many other modalities. Mri is the best imaging exam that we have for most soft tissue and joint related problems. Will a cat scan of my head rule out MS or a brain tumor better than mri? Had one before but am having another one due to vertigo.Im 18.Am i in danger?

No: Mri is by far the test of choice for ms. Either way will detect brain tumors, but actual better picture of the tumor itself with a mri. There is no danger to mri. Cat scans have radiation, but your doctor will guide you in consultation with a radiologist as to which test is most appropriate for your symptoms. ...Read more

Would a Brain MRI W/O Contrast & a CT Scan with and W/O Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

MRI: A MRI with contrast is sufficient to detect evidence of a brain tumor. If there is any question as to whether a brain tumor is present or not, one can opt to repeat the MRI of the brain with contrast three months after the last MRI brain was obtained. ...Read more

Would a Brain MRI without Contrast & a CT Scan with and without Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

Would a Brain MRI without Contrast & a CT Scan with and without Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

No symptomatic tumor: It is a pretty safe bet that MRI together with contrast CT can exclude a symptomatic tumor (mass) in the head. That does not mean all causes of headache or neurologic complaint are seen. Only your practitioner can give more advice to "put your mind at ease" and further direct your diagnostic journey. ...Read more

If im in the ER and they wanna check for a brain tumor by doing a CT scan. Can i request an MRI without contrast instead or is that not an option?

If im in the ER and they wanna check for a brain tumor by doing a CT scan. Can i request an MRI without contrast instead or is that not an option?

Yes/No: A ct scan has the advantage of being fast (and cheap from the insurance companies standpoint) and gives a good enough resolution as a screening test. You can request an MRI without contrast, however, if something is found, you need to get another MRI scan which is a longer, and more expensive, time commitment. ...Read more

What to do if i just got diagnosed with a brain tumor. Can i get a printout copy of my CT can or mri?

CD: These days, radiology departments and practices make digital images, and provide patients with digital copies on a cd-rom. You should certainly be able to obtain copies of any of your own medical images on request, and they will provide them on a cd. "printouts" just are not done anymore. ...Read more

Causes of headache and light headedness weird feeling for two days? I'm scared of brain tumor. I had a clear MRI and CT four months ago though am I ok

Sudafed: Headache lightheaded and weird felling in your head and you take sudafed ? It could be from sinusitis or the sudafed itself. Other possibilities include hypoglycemia, elevated BP or even low BP. It's unlikely with a negative CT or MRI four months ago you would have developed a brain mass of sufficient size to cause these symptoms ( unless you hit your head hard enough to cause a slow bleed. ). ...Read more

A cat scan without contrast can that still detect a brain tumor ?

A cat scan without contrast can that still detect a brain tumor ?

Not always: It is much harder to detect smaller lesions on non-contrast head ct, but large tumors causing swelling or pressure on other parts of the brain can usually be detected. Usually brain MRI with contrast is more sensitive and gives me a more detailed picture when I am trying to evaluate for brain tumors. ...Read more

Cluster of symptoms: Hard to say with a general cluster of symptoms what may be happening, but if they are significant they should be evaluated. Conditions such as brain tumor are quite rare and ct/mri scans may be ordered by a physician after a thorough history and exam. Don't ignore your symptoms, but be cautious about jumping to the most severe conclusion without more of a work-up. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Ct scan uses data from a beam of xrays and reconstructs a cross sectional image of your body. It is a high dose of xrays and used only when the benefits outweigh the risk. Cancer risk is 1 in 500 in children. Also using iodinated contrast might cause transient renal failure in about 5% of patients. (contrast induced nepropathy) most do not explain this to the patient as ...Read more

"tumor" literally translates as "mass", so even a fresh bruise could be called a "tumor". Doctors use the term "neoplasm" (tranlates literally as new growth) to describe tumors that are abnormal growths of cells. These may be benign or malignant; "malignant" = cancer. In everyday usage, we use "tumor" ...Read more
