Mri (Definition)

Mri or magnetic resonance imaging is one of the more recently developed imaging modalities available to physicians. It uses powerful magnets to generate images. There is no ionizing radiation which is a major advantage over many other modalities. Mri is the best imaging exam that we have for most soft tissue and joint related problems. Other things: Here are a few others I can think of--hydrocephalus, brain infections, vascular malformations, congenital malformations (chiari, etc.), sinus problems, spinal fluid leak, fractures, sinus thrombosis, certain demyelinating processes, vasculitis, certain toxicities. I get a headache just about everyday. Had MRI which was normal. No cause of them. Can headaches just happen? What is a headache

Yes: The vast majority of headache sufferers have no abnormality on brain imaging. This can be frustrating to patients because they want to see a clear source of their pain. Our understanding of pain associated with headaches is complicated and lacking in a clear cause. So the short answer is, headaches just happen. ...Read more

Forgetfulnes: First a neuro pschological test wil identify deficits if any. Make sure the MRI included careful scanning of the pituitary gland to rule out pituary adenoma. There is now a pet scan test to diagnose or evaluate dementia

Ibump on my backhead left lower causes me chronic pain/headaches. MRI shows nothing. What could it be? Have had it for 5 years. Only getting worse.

Hard to say: Might it be a sebaceous cyst? Might it be chronic inflammation at muscle insertions? There is an answer but it doesn't surprise me the MRI was negative. What does a formal palpatory exam reveal? Start with your pcp and get a referral if need be. ...Read more

I have 24/7 headache in forehead. Dr said tension. MRI was clean. I sleep with fan in my face all night. Could it be the cause or making worse?

Persistent headache: Does it occur in cold weather too? Does it go away with tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen? Do you have stuffy nose or nasal allergies? Is your B/P ok, did have an eye exam lately? I don't think the fan has anything to do with it. Try to sleep without the fan one night & see what happens may be it dry your nasal mucosa, use aline nose drops before bed time. If they persisted consult a neurologist. Good luck ...Read more

Sometimes, yes: MRI brain is done in HA mostly to rule out serious problems like tumor, inflammation, infections, abscess causing HA, which is non-responsive to meds, worsening day by day and increase in severity.
If you just have plain daily HA, which has been contrast then chances of MRI will show anything is pretty low. I would recommend virtual consult or concierge with me to discuss further. ...Read more

What causes all over headaches all day? I have rhinitis since April. Neuro doesn't suspect tumor and won't so MRI. Suspects migraine or allergies

Varies: What you're experiencing is frustrating. In a 29 year old man with a recent history of rhinitis, chronic rhinitis or sinusitis is definitely a consideration. I'd want to know if there were any additional symptoms associated with what you're experiencing. Do you have a family history of headaches as well - this might put migraine higher on my list. A PCP visit is recommended. Take care! ...Read more

Recent MRI due to headaches discovered brain infarction. Could that be the cause of my headaches and is it possible to figure out when I had a stroke?

Recent MRI due to headaches discovered brain infarction. Could that be the cause of my headaches and is it possible to figure out when I had a stroke?

Not all strokes same: An MRI can tell a tremendous amount about a stroke, including approximately when it happened, the size, and the location. Many people have microvascular disease that leads to small strokes as they age, and they rarely have much significance. An acute stroke, on the other hand, is an emergency. Have a closer look at the MRI report and talk to your doctor about the details of the implications. ...Read more

17 yo had severe daily headaches for 9 months without clear cause. Had clear MRI when started. Should I have repeat MRI/ct now?

Not necessarily: MRI may or may not show the cause of a headache. Given that you are 17 I would be concerned. There are many causes for headaches some more serious than others and it is crucial to be evaluated by a Neurologist so as not to miss potential serious problems. ...Read more

Pregnant ; Headache: Sounds like a cluster ha. These can be common in pregnancy, but avoid taking any "migraine" medications, because they might not be safe for you. If they keep returning, tell your obstetrician. Otherwise, it may be a random event. When in doubt about any symptom during pregnancy, however trivial, always consult your ob. That is what they're there for! ...Read more

Car acident 18m ago I have headaches and pain in my neck I had 20 sessions of physio MRI showed minor posterior protusion c6-c7 is this cause of pain?

Challenging: Not so sure that the disc protrusion is responsible for your symptoms, unless it truly is compressing nerve root. Would certainly have an evaluation for a problem within the proximal brachial plexus, which could have been injured by shoulder strap. The term "thoracic outlet syndrome" refers to a possible problem which may be somewhat difficult to diagnose. Find an experienced physiatrist. ...Read more

Neurologist requested MRI due to severe headaches, migraines, numbness, etc. Nurse called, result is angioma "not serious". Could that be the cause?

Venous angiomas: Or developmental venous anomalies (DVAs), if that's what the nurse is referring to, are generally incidental findings and, in the vast majority of cases, of no clinical significance and requiring no treatment. So it is unlikely to be the cause of your symptoms, but you should discuss the results with your doctor if you have questions. ...Read more

Please help me! I'm getting lots of headaches had MRI 4-18-13 & CT a mth ago both normal of brain what is this cause for so many headaches? Top head

See Neuro: There are no easy answers for you. The good thing is your scans were normal. The cause of headaches are difficult to define, and at times may be purely a genetic trait you inherited. There are many trigger foods (such as caffeine) for example, that can cause headaches. Eye problems, menstrual/hormonal issues, etc. Can all play a role. Keep up with a neuro doc and be diligent. Best wishes. ...Read more
