Would a contrast CT scan with barium swallow pick up decompensated liver cirrhosis?

Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

No contrast CT showed ill defined hypodense area on hepatic lobe. Ordered new CT w contrast w liver mass protocol not hemangioma protocol concerning?

Get iv contrast CT: There are many reasons to have a liver mass, more often than not, they are benign, but clearly depending on past medical history, It is difficult without contrast to differentiate these lesions, there are various ways to give intravenous contrast. A hemangioma protocol is also known as a triphasic study, allows one to look at three phases of liver perfusion but more complex to do. ...Read more

Lung tumor CT scan with or without contrast?

Lung tumor CT scan with or without contrast?

Either: I usually do them without so I don't expose the patient to the contrast, which can injure kidneys. However, if the tumor is close to the mediastinum, I usually do order it with contrast because it's often difficult to tell the various structures apart without it. It also helps to identify lymph nodes. ...Read more

Does non contrast abdomen pelvis CT show any problems with pancreas? Drank contrast but didn't have IV in arm?

Does non contrast abdomen pelvis CT show any problems with pancreas? Drank contrast but didn't have IV in arm?

Full study: For pancreatic cancer a full study is needed. Contrast in the bowel will allow the radiologist to evaluate. A thorough history by your doctor first to ask smoking history and risks is the first step. Intravenous contrast will peruse through the vascular beds. Operative planning for a pancreatic mass would include absence of mesenteric vascular involvement. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Can a brain aneurysm show on MRI with contrast?

Can a brain aneurysm show on MRI with contrast?

Only if large enough: MRI with contrast has a resolution limit of about 5 mm, depending on the field strength of the magnet & the spin sequence performed (resolution of time-of-flight MRI or TOF-MRI is even worse). The "gold standard" for an aneurysm is a fluoroscopic angiogram of the brain, which only interventional neurologists or radiologists perform 4 (1) known stroke or (2) genetics. Possible : The IV contrast provides imaging of blood flow into kidneys and will detect blockages, aneurysms, asymmetric flow, mass, structural problems. Lab draw and renal panel provide functional information on how your kidneys are performing as filters. Your doc will want to follow up with you after all the studies are complete to give you results. The IV contrast itself can be damaging to your kidney. ...Read more
