Constipation: There are several options. I usually tell my pts to take a bottle of magnesium citrate to help initially. Then start a daily regimen of Miralax (polyethylene glycol). Also increase your fluids and fiber in your diet. If you drink the magnesium citrate and don't have a bowel movement you need to follow up with your doctor. ...Read more

What is the best over-the-counter meds or way to cleanse your system? Want to cleanse my system because have never done it other than a laxative.

Not necessary: Intestinal tract normally cleans itself. Many people require laxatives or stool softners if bowels can not be regulated by diet alone. Various so called spa treatments, bowel "cleansing treatments" & high colonics etc. Vary from unnecessary to somewhat fraudulent. They only truly benefit those receiving payment. Don't ask the provider about benefits, they are biased & have mortgage payments. ...Read more

Is it safe to take over-the-counter senna laxative every day to relieve constipation?

Is it safe to take over-the-counter senna laxative every day to relieve constipation?

Constipation: Constipation becomes more of an issue as we grow older. If a high fiber diet, plenty of water and avoidance of too much dairy (they harder the stool) doesn't keep tou regular, then it's much better to take a daily laxative than to strain or not go for days. So the laxative won't counter react with the Azo pill and not make it not work right?

It depends on the: laxative I guess, but the answer lies in what you are doing with Azo to start with. Azo should not be taken for more than 2-3 days, as the acute infection improves. If you take Azo for more than that, like any other numbing agents, it does not work quite as well. No numbing or pain countering agents work 100% if you take it longer than you should, even if you still have pain. ...Read more

Is over-the-counter glycolic acid cream, let's say 10%, as powerful as 0.05% Tretinoin for minor lines on face?

Comparing medicines: Unfortunately it's not like comparing apples to apples. The concentrations of two different medicines don't always have the same effect. The vehicle or the purity may affect how "strong" it is. Tretinoin tends to be more effective but for mild rytids (wrinkles) the glycolic acid may work well ...Read more
