45 YO male

Cause for concern? Meds needed?
I'd manage it: Cholesterol's mostly genetic & you may need Rx. Many physicians would start a statin, but if you haven't given some really robust exercise a fair try, think about that first. You remember how much fun you had as a super-fit teen. Could you try getting back to the lifestyle? If that's not possible or doesn't work, then talk with your physician seriously about meds. Best wishes. ...Read more

Blood tests: There are a few diseases that leap out from blood tests. Most of the time, however, blood tests don't tell the doctor much on their own. These results fall into the second group. Good health to you. It is reassuring that the results do not consistently keep rising. ...Read more

Are there any long term risks in taking 6g fish oil @60%=4g of omega3?
What for?: Why do you feel the need to take so much fish oil? First of all, you are better off getting your fish oil directly from fish like wild alakan salmon or sardines. Second, high concentrations of fish oil can cause anti coagulation that can make you susceptible to bleeding. Good health will not come from a pill. ...Read more
I'm 36 years old, healthy, smoker, doing a lot of sport activity. My ldl is 173.9, total cholesterol 261.4, hdl 68 and tg 98. Am I at high risk?
Yes: Your LDL and cholestrol are higher than desired. While HDL and trig are good, smoking and high LDL put you at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. First thing you should do is quit smoking. Depending on your family history and rest of health issues, your doctor may put you on a statin. It would be prudent to see your doctor about it. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. ...Read more

I've started a plant based low fat diet, but it prohibits all fats, even natural fats. Are fats needed? Is a lack of fats bad for my health?
Fats are essential: Good fats are critical for health. Your brain operates on fat, not glucose like the rest of the body. Naturally occurring vegetarian fats such as nuts, avocados, seeds, olive oil are great and if only eating a vegetarian diet, you will need more. Plant based diets are great if done well which means eating real vegetables, some fruit, lots of nuts and seeds, and minimizing the carbs to 3/day ...Read more
