In the acute phase of mono there may false negatives with either method. ...Read more
I had a monospot test one year ago and was positive for mono. Now 11 months later I've had anotherpositive. Could this be the same infection?
Same antibodies: The simple screening test for mono often just indicates the presence of antibodies to the EB virus which should be present for quite a while. Viral detection studies could be ordered but these are more expensive & generally reserved for confusing cases. Specific IgM antibody to the EB virus is more specific to new infection but this fades leaving the IgG antibody for long term ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Not necessarily: It wouldn't hurt to undergo testing of immune function, but some infectious entities, like epstein barr virus, the cause of infectious mono, never leave your body once you have them. This herpes virus may produce recurrences and reinfections (difficult to differentiate). It also has the capacity to cause or predispose to certain malignancies. We don't fully know why some are more susceptible. ...Read more
Been tired/sick & was tested for Mono. Monospot came back positive, EBV came back negative. Can it take longer for EBV antibodies to show? Worried...
Mono not specific: Monospot is not specific for EBV infection and may be positive due to other viral infections. Even if it is mono, there is no specific treatment for it and you need to wait out for the symptoms to subside. If you are want to be sure, repeat the EBV antibody test in two weeks. Wish you good health! ...Read more
Monospot POS, EBV-NEG, WBC 2.3. Was retested for EBV and WBC today, but is it normal for WBC to be LOW with Mono? Worried it could be something worse?
Common in mono: Infectious mononucleosis can cause low WBC. How important it is, and whether there might be another contributing cause, depend on other things, especially the differential count, i.e. the numbers of the various types of WBC. Probably nothing to worry about, but something to discuss with the doctor you are seeing. Good luck! ...Read more
My college student diagnosed with mono by monospot 4 wks ago. Only symptoms itchiness and lymph nodes. They are smaller but not gone .should I worry?
Another culture of my throat and told me to come back tomorrow for a monospot. Is there a high possibility that i may have mono, what to do?
Maybe: Mononucleosis presents with swollen tonsils that may have white to yellow exudates, skin rash, enlarged lymph nodes on the front ; back of your neck and enlarged spleen ;/or liver. Your white blood cell will be elevated. A monospot test will show - or + for mono ; antibody titers can distinguish btwn old vs new infection. ...Read more

Elevated white count: Is just one piece of data which needs to be put in context with many other pieces of information. The differentiation suggests bacterial causes. I would be interested in how your numbers are trending to know whether you are mending or getting worse. Best regards. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My college student was diagnosed with mono by monospot. She has no symptoms but enlarged lymph nodes on her neck for 3 days. Should we consult diff dr?
If the monospot is: positive, it means that she either has mono now,or has had it in the past. There are also occasional false positives. Not everyone has all the classic symptoms of mono,so just having enlarged neck lymph nodes could be the only symptom. No need to see another doctor, but you could request a more comprehensive test, called EpsteinBarrVirus titers and a CBC to have confirmation. ...Read more
College student confirmed mono by monospot . Only symptoms are enlarged lymph nodes and itchy all over at night. One week. Can it be lymphoma? Help!!
Give it time: Monospot test is specific for mono infection, so most probably this is what she has. I would recommend to keep her being evaluated by the primary physician or ENT. If neck nodes do not change in a couple of weeks, then fine needle biopsy would be advise, but most probably not with a positive Monospot test. Hope this helps. Still no contact sports for several weeks. ...Read more
