Not necessarily: It wouldn't hurt to undergo testing of immune function, but some infectious entities, like epstein barr virus, the cause of infectious mono, never leave your body once you have them. This herpes virus may produce recurrences and reinfections (difficult to differentiate). It also has the capacity to cause or predispose to certain malignancies. Been tired/sick & was tested for Mono. Monospot came back positive, EBV came back negative. Can it take longer for EBV antibodies to show? Worried...
Mono not specific: Monospot is not specific for EBV infection and may be positive due to other viral infections. Even if it is mono, there is no specific treatment for it and you need to wait out for the symptoms to subside. If you are want to be sure, repeat the EBV antibody test in two weeks. Monospot POS, EBV-NEG, WBC 2.3. Was retested for EBV and WBC today, but is it normal for WBC to be LOW with Mono? Worried it could be something worse?
Common in mono: Infectious mononucleosis can cause low WBC. How important it is, and whether there might be another contributing cause, depend on other things, especially the differential count, i.e. the numbers of the various types of WBC.
