Infectious : Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the epstein barr virus (ebv) and acute infection usually involves sore throat, fever, enlarged lymph nodes (including the spleen), and tiredness. Different people will have a different severity of mono symptoms - some get very ill, some do not get sick at all. It is spread through saliva and close contact which is why it's been known as the "kissing disease". Since it is a virus, it is not treated with antibiotics. There is a blood test available that can test for mono infection and antibodies. The test will tell you if he has ever had it, if he has it now, or if he had it in the past and is now immune to it - all helpful information. A strep test does not give information about any other infections - just strep. I attached a link for more in-depth information on infectious mono below. ...Read more

Hey, I never really smoked before but yesterday I had a few and now I have some white spots on my throat. strep throat? Mononucleosis? Infection?

Likely an infection: Most sore throats are caused by viruses and do not require antibiotics. Rest. Drink lots of fluids. Gargle with warm salt water 4 x/day. Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) up to 4 times/day if you have a fever or feel uncomfortable. If your symptoms do not improve in 4-5 days you should have a strep test. If strep throat is not treated with antibiotics, it can lead to serious consequences. DON'T SMOKE! ...Read more

Ask About Prednisone: On top of medications like Voltfast (diclofenac) you can take, at the same time of, or maybe in your case in-between, doses. The two work by different mechanisms and don't interfere with each other (assuming you have normal liver and kidney function and take as directed). Also, here's an excuse to eat ice cream or ice milk because cold helps. There is also another medication your doctor can prescribe ...Read more

Get eval: Mono can last for quite some time. The sore throat is most likely another infection all together, especially this time of the year (cold and flu season). Best for you to see a dr. To get fully evaluated to determine if your sore throat is viral or bacterial and get the correct treatment accordingly. Good luck to you. ...Read more

Type of germ: Atypical bacteria is a label given to a group of germs with different physical characteristics than usual bacteria. The term has no significance to you, other than the doc has made the assessment that the features of your infection will respond best to meds used to treat the atypicals. It is doctor jargon, sorry we're so confusing. ...Read more

In a case of mono do the white patches go away leaving you just a red swollen throat?

In a case of mono do the white patches go away leaving you just a red swollen throat?

Yes. : With infectious mononucleosis( a viral illness), commonly there is a very sore throat with enlarged tonsils and white exudate in the crypts. Not uncommonly, this is treated as a strep throat with ampicillin; curiously enough, Ampicillin rx for mono not uncommonly causes a fine red body rash. At any rate, lots of fluids, saline gargles, tylenol, (acetaminophen) and adequate rest. Full time rest not needed. ...Read more
