7 yr old barking cough over two wks. Walk-in clinic doc noted inflamed tonsils, nasal infection - prescribed penicillin. Does this seem appropriate?
Hard to say: If the findings are as stated treatment would be indicated.I would have used a different antibiotic & tested for strep since that can be done simply. Cough for 2 wks is common with a sinus infection. If things have not improved a re-check is indicated. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Coughing non-stop for about 1 week. Deep / rhaspy productive cough with discolored phlgem. Phys asst put me on amoxicillian. No improvement. Ideas?
Possibilities...: There may be a bronchospastic cough complicating the acute bronchitis picture. A sputum culture can determine if the correct antibiotic was chosen and a bronchodilator inhaler and a steroid inhaler can be added so the bronchospasm will be controlled. These steps should improve the cough. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Needs in-person exam: A doctor can write a note after doing an in-person exam. Generally, doctors do not write notes such as work-excuse or school-excuse notes, or back-to-work or back-to-school notes, without an exam. That is because a doctor's note is his written, signed, professional opinion, on whether a patient can or cannot do a particular activity. An in-person exam gives confidence to the doctor's opinion. ...Read more

Environmental??: There are environmental exposures that can lead to black stained sputum. Have you had a sputum culture done? A sputum culture will identify any bacteria present as well as what antibiotics would best treat it. Seeing an allergist might also be helpful to identify any environmental exposures and how to avoid them, if possible. Good luck! ...Read more

May be a carrier: A subset of the population will carry strep in their throat continuously , often without strep disease/symptoms but are treated as strep when they come in on a positive test but have a viral throat problem. They can also have recurrent strep if there is a carrier in their close circle. If he is being retested/treated when there is no symptoms I would stop. ...Read more

Productive cough.Runny nose. Both w/ yellow mucus. No fever.Tight chest.Throat a bit sore. Smoker. Allergies?Cold?Bronchitis?Something else? See a dr?
Sinobronchitis: This probably is a sinus infection with bronchitis. You are more at risk due to smoking. If it is recurrent you could have underlying allergies and asthma which could also be a factor. Unfortunately people with asthma smoke at the same frequency as those who are not asthmatic. ...Read more

2 yr old son, 103.9f fever 1 day, runny nose, occasional cough, red throat. Flu test negative. Dr said viral but gave antibiotic. What's his sickness?
Not sure.........: With a history of one day of fever runny nose and cough, this sounds very viral. I am not sure why your son was given an antibiotic--a throat swab was not done to consider strep throat, the only throat infection for which an antibiotic would be given, ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Mild pneumonia (seen on film). Dr. rx'd Cedinifir 2 nites ago. Just starting dry cough. No fever. Should I get expectorant? Delsym (dextromethorphan) = diarrhea.
Pulmonary infiltrate: Whether or not you have a pneumonia likely to respond to a cephalosporin antibiotic is very questionable and would need more info to say for sure, but an infiltrate with a dry cough sounds more like an atypical pneumonia and this is not likely to respond to the antibiotic you have been given. If you are significantly symptomatic (fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, etc.) see an ID doctor. ...Read more

Viral vs bacterial: This could be many things. Strep throat causes fever headache and sore throat often with what is called exudate. Mono can have similar symptoms as well. Viral illnesses usually cause blisters that are whitish centrally with surrounding erythema, ie redness. Very important to make sure your child is able to drink well and swallow, if not your child should be seen asap. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
