Re the issue of ice pack vs heat pack for someone with costochrondritis?Tried a heat pack - disappointed, ice pack seems better, what does each offer?
Ice..,: costochondritis is often helped w/ NSAIDs ( Ibuprofen , for example) and ice packs or ice massage to the affected rib, especially when symptoms are of recent origin or after exercise . Ice 'vasoconstricts' ( decreases size of blood vessels ) and thus often improves the swelling associated w/ costochondritis. Additionally it may help to 'numb' the affected area and lessen the pain . Often heat, but...: If you've acutely injured your back (strain, contusion/bruise, etc) then cold compresses for the first few days will probably help. If this is a chronic recurrent problem, pain related to muscle spasm and tension then often a heating pad, warm showers, massage can be helpful. Its short-term use poses no proven harm to testes; in long-term use, it can be like working in hot environment has been blamed for male infertility with poor sperm quality.
