Mitral Valve Prolapse (Definition)
When the mitral valve that separates the heart's left atrium and left ventricle does not close appropriately. When the heart contracts to push blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body, portions of the mitral valve move backwards into the left atrium. This can cause regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. Most of the time a mitral valve prolapse is asymptomatic and does ...Read more

My doctor says I may have mitral valve prolapse. However there's a ten month wait for an ethnocardiogram, my symptoms are persisting and sometimes worsening, chest pain, rapid heart beat, shortness of breath post excercise, fatigue, what should I do?

Nothing: If you haven't had the echo, then the diagnosis of mvp has not been established. Even if you do have it, mvp does not cause these symptoms. Doctors blame all kinds of things on mvp but they are not related. There is no treatment required for mvp and none that is helpful. If the wait for an echo is that long then you are in the wrong health system. ...Read more

Why is mitral valve prolapse effective?

Mitral valve prolaps:
I will assume you did not mean effective but harmful :-)
when the valve leaflets "prolapse" they bend back and no longer seal, resulting in significant leakage of the valve. This increases the amount of work the heart has to perform, resulting in decrease in exercise capacity and more shortness of breath. Of course, the leakage can be a little with few symptoms or severe...

What are the symptoms of mitral valve prolapse?
Often little to none: Mitral valve prolapse is a disorder of the mitral valve which affects the way it closes. Most of the time this results in little no leak. As long as there is little to no leak most patients will have no symptoms. Most patients with mitral valve prolapse probably don't even know about it. If there are symptoms usually they are related to an increase in the leakage of the valve. ...Read more

What is the significance of mitral valve prolapse?

Depends: Most of the time, it is a minor problem. It can result in significant leakage of the valve, chest pain, palpitations, valve infection, and heart rhythm disturbances. So it really depends on the severity of the problem. Fortunately, most cases are relatively benign. We used to routinely give antibiotics prior to dental and other procedures, but that is no longer recommended. ...Read more

What are uncommon symptoms for mitral valve prolapse?
MVP: MVP is mostly asymptomatic. Common symptoms ascribed to the condition are palpitations, shortness of breath and fatigue with symptoms, atypical chest pressure, palpitations and arrhythmia. If the prolapse progresses to significant (severe) mitral regurgitation, then the patient can develop symptoms of severe mitral regurgitation. ...Read more

Is mitral valve prolapse fatal?
Rarel: Mitral valve prolapse can cause palpitations, shortness of breath, or chest pain but isi seldom fatal. If the valve is leaking severely or if it gets infected, the problem can become serious. ...Read more
13
What is the pathogenesis of mitral valve prolapse?
MVP: Mitral valve prolapse results from a weakness or floppiness of the valve leaflets due to an abnormality in the connective tissue in the leaflets. Mitral valve prolapse syndrome is associated with chest pain, rhythm disturbances and mitral regurgitation, and possibly strokes. ...Read more
14
What is the pathogenesis of a mitral valve prolapse?
Myxomatous change: Mitral valve prolapse is due to the mitral valve tissue being slightly redundant. Often this is related to slight thickening of the tissue and stretching of the chords that guide how far the valve moves. Sometimes the valve leaks, other times not. In may cases this is completely benign. Sometimes people feel their heart skip. ...Read more

Can mitral valve prolapse be a cause of svt?

Not likely: Mvp typically doesn't cause too many problems in an otherwise healthy person. If there is an underlying heart problem or other disease process at work, then all bets are off. While it may be associated with it, the mvp isn't likely to be the direct cause. ...Read more

Could mitral valve prolapse cause dizziness?

Depends on rhythm: Mild mitral valve prolapse (mvp) would not cause symptoms. If the mvp was severe, it can lead to mitral regurgitation. This is associated with certain atrial arrhythmias which can cause dizziness. ...Read more

Does mitral valve prolapse cause chest pain?

I have mitral valve prolapse should I use Yasmin?

No likely relation!: Mitral prolapse=a visual "guess" Dx from echocardiogram images. With same video image set, some cardiololigists (at high end) call mitral prolapse in as ≥50%, others (at low end) say MVP in ≤3%. No basis for relationship to pain/symptoms & as long as no mitral valve leak, no correlation with long term outcome. Dx most commonly given to young slender affluent women without apparent heart problems. ...Read more

Can you be a police officer if you have mitral valve prolapse?

Hard to comment: MVP is quite variable. It may or may not be associated with a leaky mitral valve. It may have no effect on a persons health or place them at risk of heart failure. Can I take pepcid (famotidine) if I have Mitral Valve Prolapse?
Not on omeperazole: It is not recommended to take pepcid while on omeperazole as there is duplication of therapy or effect. However, having mitral valve prolapse does not pose any specific reason why one could not take pepcid or any other h2 blocker such as zantac, (ranitidine) pepcid etc. ...Read more

Valve (Definition)
A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more
