How long does mirtazapine take to start to work?

2 - 4 weeks: Like most other antidepressants, Mirtazapine (brand name remeron) usually starts to result in improvement after about 2 weeks of use, with increasing benefit over the next several weeks. I am on sertraline and clonazepam for depression. I keep having suicidal thoughts.I want to know why the doctor did not prescribe mirtazapine?

You need to contact: Your doctor. You really need to first of all make sure that you're safe. If you are not feeling safe then make sure that you go to the hospital or call an ambulance or get around friends and family who will watch out for your safety until you're feeling better. You should personally ask your doctor why he chose the antidepressant that he did. All antidepressants are pretty much equal. In their efficacy. My guess is that he didn't select Remeron because it tends to cause a lot of weight gain. Now however he should be able to augment the zoloft with Remeron if you prefer, wellbutrin, or abilify (aripiprazole). There are many other options as well. Please take care of yourself and best wishes. ...Read more
