I have a colonoscopy tomorrow. I took my bowel prep of about an hour ago. In how much time will it start working? Will a gatorade/miralax mix not work?

I have a colonoscopy tomorrow. I took my bowel prep of about an hour ago. In how much time will it start working? Will a gatorade/miralax mix not work?

May not work: A gatorade and MiraLAX combination is not a common bowel prep in my experience. Miralax is an excellent laxative but if only one dose is taken, it is not likely to clean the colon out as well as is optimal for colonoscopy. A single dose might not produce a bm for a day or 2. Gatorade is an electrolyte-rich drink but not likely as effective as GoLytely or other polyethylene glycol solutions. ...Read more

Can you have a fecal impaction and still have a normal bowel movement once a day (while taking miralax)?

Can you have a fecal impaction and still have a normal bowel movement once a day (while taking miralax)?

No, by definition: If you have a fecal impaction, that means you are not having any bowel movements, because the impaction is in the way. After treatment, the bowel movements should return, and you no longer have an impaction. ...Read more

I have lazy bowel syndrome, & have to take miralax (polyethylene glycol) daily. Could this affect my ability to get pregnant? Is it safe?

Should be OK: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) (/peg derivatives) are not absorbed and pull water into the GI tract (--or keep it there--). Should not have impact on reproductive cycle. Many patients, including pediatric ones, use it daily for years without problems. ...Read more

Why can't i take miralax (polyethylene glycol) if I have bowel obstruction? Can i take miralax (polyethylene glycol) and glycerin suppositories one day apart?

Why can't i take miralax (polyethylene glycol) if I have bowel obstruction? Can i take miralax (polyethylene glycol) and glycerin suppositories one day apart?

What: If you are currently having bowel obstruction, taking MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) would be bad, very bad. Think of it like plumbling. If you main drain of the toilet is block, greasing or flushing the toilet is not going to unclogged the blockage for you. If you had a bowel blockage but resolve now then taking MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) is ok. ...Read more

Constipation: If you have the urge to have a bm but can't, try working from below using dulcolax rectal suppository and/or a gentle low enema like fleets. If you have abdominal distension, severe cramps or vomiting, you will have to be examined by your physician who sometimes has to disimpact you by breaking up and removing impacted stool or prescribing a higher enema. ...Read more

My daughter is 2 and a half and has to take miralax (polyethylene glycol) every day. How many days is safe to go without a bowel movement?

My daughter is 2 and a half and has to take miralax (polyethylene glycol) every day. How many days is safe to go without a bowel movement?

Constipation: Constipation is fairly common in young children. It is usually due to low fiber diet or decreased liquid intake. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) works by drawing water into intestine to bulk up stool. A child on MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) should have soft stool every 1-2 days. If child remains constipated, please see your pediatrician fir full evaluation. ...Read more
