Pattern hair loss: Both Minoxidil and Propecia (finasteride) are very helpful in keeping the hair you still have. In 30-35% of men, there is significant hair regrowth. Most men get some regrowth. Side effects of Minoxidil are mostly local, such as irritation of scalp. Propecia (finasteride) blocks 5 Alpha reductase, enzyme that converts testosterone to dht. Hair grows in cycles: Hair grows in a cycle. There is nothing you can apply now that will maintain efficacy several cycles from now. I am a fan of biotin, and always use it as an adjunct to treatment for thinning hair. I typically recommend a dose of 3000 mcg per day to see benefit in hair growth. Yes, with caution: The real question is "is it safe to not take minoxidil" which is a powerful anti hypertensive agent. The drug can cause low pressure, edema, pericardial and pleural effusions. It causes hair growth which may be unwanted it must be used with a powerful diuretic and a beta blocker. If it is used on the skin for hair growth these side effects are uncommon and the additional medications not needed. ...Read more
