He has blood in his stool. Doctor think he has milk allergy. We tried many formula and does not like. Now he does not like to sleep what to do.

Hypoallergenic: Have you tried a hypoallergenic formula and which ones have you tried. You may need an elemental formula like Neocate to see if he might tolerate that, It may take a few days to see the changes in his BM's. His sleep problems may be related to the feeding issues. ...Read more

Gastrointestinal Bleeding (Definition)

A long tube runs from the mouth to the anus. It includes, in order, the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileus), caecum, the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon (or large intestine) and the rectum. The space inside that tube , the lumen, is considered to be outside of the body. When we bleed into that space ...Read more

How best to diagnose milk allergy? Skin test or blood test?

How best to diagnose milk allergy? Skin test or blood test?

Probably skin.: If someone is allergic to some allergen, like milk, a skin test can be done to see if there is reaction to it. Swelling and redness of the site can tell how severe it is. Clinical labs may be able to test reactions serologically, so blood might be taken also for this. ...Read more

Allergy RAST/blood (IgE) test reports no milk allergy. Is it possible I could still be allergic to dairy? Suffering from thick nasal mucus.

Allergy RAST/blood (IgE) test reports no milk allergy. Is it possible I could still be allergic to dairy? Suffering from thick nasal mucus.

Yes: Either RAST (replaced by ImmunoCap IgE) and prick skin testing can miss some food allergies. I often test a patient to the food itself when the history and test findings do not match. Recently I was about to challenge a young boy to walnut (history positive, skin test negative) when the skin test turned out to be highly positive to the actual nut. Mold & mite allergies are more likely in HK. ...Read more

My blood test said I have a milk allergy (moderate), but i still drink milk. Could the blood tests have been wrong? Could it weaken my immune system?

My blood test said I have a milk allergy (moderate), but i still drink milk. Could the blood tests have been wrong? Could it weaken my immune system?

Irrelevant test : Unfortunately, food allergy testing by skin test or blood test is not very predictive. A negative skin test is very good about saying a person is not allergic, but positive blood and skin tests are very common and are clinically relevant less than 50% of the time. The real milk test is what happens when you drink it----nothing. This is a problem with the test and not your immune system. ...Read more

History is more..: Important, if you're not allergic to milk when you drink it, it means you aren't, allergy blood tests are good negative tests, i.e can rule out , not prove that you are allergic to a certain element, especially foods, and history is more reliable ...Read more

My 3 month son has silent reflux doctor thinks he has milk allergy will a stool sample confirm this also why does s/r cause my bby to cough & wheeze?

My 3 month son has silent reflux doctor thinks he has milk allergy will a stool sample confirm this also why does s/r cause my bby to cough & wheeze?

No / reactive airway: A stool sample is unlikely to provide any significant information on reflux or wheezing. Reflux is a universal event, a burp is a dry reflux from the stomach while the wet ones cause most of the problems. Your windpipe has a flap designed to close & let you swallow fluids/food. When you reflux, it can get a little fluid past the flap & trigger cough, wheezing & occasionally a pneumonia. ...Read more
