Pancreas (Definition)

Abdominal organ. It is digestive organ: it secretes enzymes into the small bowel which break down food and help its absorption. It is also an endocrine organ: it produces hormones involved in sugar control and control of digestion. Insulin is one of these hormones. Diabetics either lack Insulin (type 1 diabetes) or have inadequate ...Read more

Can an atrophic pancreas be reversed and if so how? What is an atrophic pancreas? Is it serious? I've had acute pancreatitis a quite a few times.

Unfortunately no: I would eliminate from your life whatever originally caused your pancreatitis and limit other things that could make it worse. Certain medicines, high fat diets and alcohol are things you can do something about. Genetic causes of pancreatitis are beyond your control but limiting the above will help prevent attacks. ...Read more

What could cause atrophy of pancreas and arthersclerotic aorta. Cholesteral normal.?

2 causes: Atrophy of the pancreas is usually caused by autoimmune destruction which may inherited or, if acquired, by repeated injury either from alcohol or recurrent pancreatitis from gall stones. Atherosclerosis is a disease of aging but diabetes (which results from an atrophied pancreas) is a major risk factor as is smoking and high blood pressure. It also can be inherited. ...Read more

Talk to your doctor!: You have a complicated health history and should be following closely with a GI physician. Talk to them! Your symptoms can't be properly evaluated in an anonymous question format and you owe it to yourself to be completely open with your physicians about how you are feeling and your concerns. They can't evaluate an issue that you don't share with them. ...Read more

Try Metformin: Metformin is an Insulin receptor sensitizer, and blocks the release of sugar from the liver (via glyconeogenesis). By taking metformin, Insulin works "better, " and your pancreas is given somewhat of a "rest." it should normalize your blood sugar, HGB a1c, and lower your Insulin levels. You might also add Acarbose (a "starch blocker") to help maintain normal blood sugar. ...Read more

I have atrophied pancreas, not an alcoholic, do not have pancreatitis or pain, no gall bladder stones, have been on metformin for probably 20 years?

I have atrophied pancreas, not an alcoholic, do not have pancreatitis or pain, no gall bladder stones, have been on metformin for probably 20 years?

Question? Cause?: I see a list of findings & medical conditions; however, I do not see a question. I suppose your question would be, "why is the pancreas shrunken (or atrophied)?" The use of metformin to compensate for less insulin produced by a shrunken pancreas. That makes sense. Often times, viruses trigger the immune system to attack the pancreas, which causes it to shrink. LADA - latent autoimmune diabetes Ab ...Read more

I had a MRI results, severe stetosis liver, kidney cysts, and mild atrophy pancreas, have been given pain pills, but no plan for treatment, ?

Treat yourself: Kidney cysts usually need no treatment and there isn't one anyway. You have much more pancreas than you need. Fatty liver in a non-alcoholic and with other serious disease ruled out is often the organ's way of asking for more aerobic exercise. Make that your mainstay if self-care.. ...Read more

83 yrs. Gallbladder removed 40 years ago. Now show sludge in gallbladder lumen. What does this mean? Nausea common for me. Also atropy pancreas

Symptoms?: Not sure what lumen you are referring to if the gallbladder was removed. You may develop gallstones in your common bile duct which could give you pain, nausea or jaundice. These can be confirmed with a test called an mrcp and removed with a procedure called an ercp. If your symptoms are minor these could probably be watched. Move forward with ERCP if pain, nausea or jaundice worsens. ...Read more

No: However, transplant of small cellular components of the pancreas which make the insulin, called islets, are done in a few experimental centers around the country. Is pancrelipase a good substitute to pancrease?

Maybe: It depends on why you're taking pancrease (pancrelipase).
